My surprise visit!
I thought I would start a thread letting you all know about my surprise visit home for my mums 65th birthday Sam, I know you have been searching for a post on it so here goes.
My first big hugs were when my dad and step mum picked me up from the airport at 1pm on Saturday. It was a great feeling being wrapped in my dads arms and getting big hugs from him. We had a quick coffee and a catch up then it was off to surprise grandma My dad had told her he was coming to visit and had a surprise for her, but she never thought it would be me!! When I walked in she was in the kitchen sort of tucked in a corner near the table looking for something. So I went in, bent round so she could see me (she is only small and hunches over a bit, well she is 94). The look on her face was fabulous, she did this big beaming smile and screamed "Ahhhhh are you my surprise?" lol. So it was more beautiful family hugs
Then we all went to my brothers house, and more big family hugs My brother has 3 little girls aged 6, 2 and 11 months. Then my sister came with my niece Hollie who is 7, her face beamed when she saw me. Hollie is extra special to me as some of you will know we used to spend a lot of time with her before we moved here. We had a great afternoon, my brother took grandma home about 7pm then it was time for the best Indian takeaway in town!! It was very funny everytime the phone rang though, everyone had to be very quiet in case it was mum
So after a great night it was Sunday and the BIG day!! But one thing I had to do on the way to surprising mum was have a quick look in Next lol. Only managed 20 minutes in there, but came away with some goodies
The meal was booked for 1pm in Didsbury. I was in the car with my sister and my two nieces and we were all on edge in case we passed mum on the road. When we got to the carpark mum was waiting in the lobby for my sister, so I had to slide right down my seat to hide from her lol. Everyone went in and left me in the car park until they were all sat down at the table, they managed to sit my mum so she had her back to the door. Out of all the people who were there, only my brother and sister and nieces knew I was about to make the big entrance. My SIL came out to get me with the cake once they were all sat down. So there was me, bent down behind the bar lighting the candles nearly setting my hair on fire lol. Then I heard my brother saying "we are doing the cake first so lets sing happy birthday", I could see people thinking "this is strange doing the cake first". So there they were singing happy birthday as I walk in with the cake, then people started spotting me. Thats when my mum turned round, I couldnt believe it but she looked straight through me as though she didnt know me. I panicked then thinking it was going to back fire, then she turned back to me and thats was it then She screamed, jumped up and flung her arms round me (I still had hold of the lit cake). My sister took the cake from me so we could hug and I didnt get a breath for about 10 minutes lol. Mum was sobbing, I was sobbing infact she had to sit down and she put her head in her hands and just sobbed. Then she would keep lifting her head up and looking at me as though she was seeing things. Its really hard to describe, but I was actually getting quite worried about her lol.
It was a wonderful weekend, and I am really glad you all talked me into going. Thanks guys

Oh Sam - I'm sat here with tears streaming down my face (started when I read the bit about your grandma seeing you). Now I have to re-apply my mascara before I go out (joking it's waterproof mascara )
What a lovely surprise for your mum. Ohhh you've got me all emotional

Hi Sam
Thanks for posting the story of your visit to UK. Sounds as though it all went totally to plan and genuinely was a complete surprise for your mum with an added bonus of surprising your grandmother too. Possibly the best 249 euro's you have ever spent, as you have said it is priceless to see people react in such a lovely way it makes you feel all warm and loved.
Well done for thinking of going in the first place and then following through as so often people say after an event that they wish they had bothered to go and continue to regret it. In your case there are no regrets and is definitely sounds as though it was even better than you anticipated.

Hi Pammy, what a great post you have had me in tears, there again it could have been the onions So, so glad it all went well for you and good to hear you gran is still in the best of health, I expect mum looked through you because she was not expecting to see you there and when the old grey cells get to a certain age it takes a little longer for things to sink in
Hi Matt my little luvver I have also shed a tear for you as I feel for peeps who do not enjoy a close family life. I do not live in my siblings pockets yet we are very close and would fight the world off for each other. Before I moved here it was an un-written law that the sunday before Christmas was family dinner day in my family and everyone would come to my house for early Christmas dinner. The whole lot would descend on us from grandparents, uncles, aunts siblings and their kids, it always amazed me that I managed to cook just the right amount of food and always had enough tables and chairs for us to sit and enjoy a day together. It makes me sad to think that so many of them have passed on to another life, back to the bright side both have karma coming your way when and if I can send it to you.
