Hello all,
For many years it has been something of a dream of mine to relocate to Spain; partly because I have always loved the time I have spent there on numerous holidays, but mostly just to give myself a better quality of life. Unfortunately, I have been plagued with a series of health issues over the last few years and those, coupled with the pandemic, have meant that I haven't been able to even begin to make that dream a reality. Thankfully those health issues are behind me now, but their aftermath,-coupled with various happenings and realities here at home- have made me doubly eager to make the move sooner rather than later.
I was born with cerebral palsy, and the realities of that condition as I get older are really beginning to hit home; especially during these horribly cold British winters. I want to make the move while I am still young and independent enough to be able to properly enjoy and appreciate it. I know from experience of my various travels abroad just how helpful a warmer climate can be with managing the effects of my condition and there's a definite feeling that if I don't make the move soon, then I never will.
Were I to make the move, I would apply for an NLV. I have attempted to do some research regarding the post-Brexit realities of moving to Spain from the UK, but truth be told, I found some of it confusing and at times somewhat daunting(perhaps I'm just dense?) from my admittedly limited understanding, the financial demands of the visa would not be an issue in terms of the sums of money required; I would appreciate some guidance though regarding what is deemed as acceptable proof. For instance, is income from investments deemed acceptable? Is it simply a matter of placing the required money in account every year and showing the powers that be proof of the account's existence and balance? Does all documentation need to be notarised?
Ideally, I would like to live in an area of Spain I am familiar with; a place in the Alicante or Valencia area such as Torrevieja perhaps. Could anyone provide me with an idea of utility prices etc in the area?
Thank you in advance for all your help. .

Welcome to the forum.
This is what the Spanish government says about the documentation required to apply for a NLV.

I have to ask would having a previous illness affect your health insurance? It maybe refused or be very costly.

Yes, apart from income requirement, your major issue will be private healthcare, which you need for one year to start with without co-payment and exclusion for pre-existing conditions. Whether you can find a Spanish policy (it will have to be) that will fully cover your conditions is something I don't know, but other people have found it very difficult with their medical history.

If you have sufficient savings plus income from investments then that should make the financial requirements easy to meet. No idea what you medical needs are but obviously if you have existing conditions that have a high chance of treatment the private policy will be high or in some cases impossible. If you are a UK pension age then you could use the S1 as a direct access to Spanish system. After 1 year of residency you can join the Spanish system at around 70 euros a month excluding medicines.
Utility prices would be roughly between 70 to 100 euros electricity. 300 water a year. Broadband/ phone 50 euro a month. If in apartment a community charge of anything from 600 to 1000 a year. Then there is a property tax which is usually around 200 for apartments a year. There are few Tax benefits in spain unlike uk and no tax savings like ISA or National Savings so all UK investments are tax on any incomes

You do realise that the NLV does not allow any work (just saying as you said you were youngish)...
I know its not current and is only a guide, but when we moved over in late 2020 I had to provide the complete policy document (40 odd pages) and we were asked for clarity due to my Wife being prescribed blood pressure medication.
The healthcare company had already agreed to cover this but Alicante still made me get a letter from the Medical company to confirm.
If anything the Consulates are going over everything with a fine tooth comb....

The above details some of the conditions of healthcare and I have quoted the relevant paragraph.
Pre-existing conditions
- There have been many documented cases where insurance companies have failed to pay out due to undeclared pre-existing conditions so it is imperative that you disclose everything which might affect the cover, such as current or past medical conditions. My own father became seriously ill and needed urgent treatment but the insurance company refused to pay out as his medical notes mentioned a condition that he was not aware that he had so for those with on-going issues it might be worthwhile getting a doctors print out and sending this over to the medical company to make sure that you are truly covered for all eventualities.
Get the Healthcare sorted first.
Without this, unfortunately you wont get any further..
Anyway, if you get healthcare, you will need to talk to the Consulate, our friends were able to get a yes with £30,000 in a savings account (he said that has to stay there due to the renewal requirements) and £1,000 a month income...
From what he said just savings are not always approved, as you may also be asked to show regular in and out of your bank account..
Something that we also had to do in 2020 (in fact I had to give 3 months bank statements with our residency application to prove we had been living here)
They will check to see if you move it in and out (people in the old days, well pre 2016, would borrow on a loan, use that money to prove savings, move here and repay the loan)
Go online to ASSA, AEGON, SANITAS etc.. and see what they say...

I would agree with everything that has been said above, but I would add two things. If you are eligible for an S1 certificate, that may well help your case. An S1 certificate is a confirmation that the NHS will continue to fund your medical treatment while living in Spain and depends on whether your are eligible under "exportable benefits". You might still need to top that up with private health care. It depends very much on your circumstances and the best way to find out is to ring the NHS Overseas Business unit which is the 0191 number on this link https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/hea...ur-healthcare/
Second thing I would add is to speak to a lawyer about your case. You are not dense!!! An NLV application is a tedious process which whilst none of it is particularly complicated, does need everything to be done in the right time and order. A good lawyer will be money very well spent, especially in a specific case like yours.
Good luck and don't give up!!
