Default Moving to Spain..

Hi guys,

I've been considering moving to Spain (Benidorm) ideally, or possibly other areas for a long time now and am just wondering what I would need to consider in terms of making the move?

I hold an EU passport. Do you know how easy it is to get a job out there at the minute, and the cost of living (rent etc).

Just need to bare a few things in mind before making a final decision, and thought I would ask your valuable advice. Much appreciated in advance.

Cheers
Dan

You might just be lucky enough to be paid peanuts for bar work, just remember there are loads of unemployed Spaniards who won't work for slave wages. However if you are taking something into Spain, rather than taking something out, it would be a different matter.

Hi Dan, I've been putting posts on here over the last year or so on that very same subject
After a lot of looking, whilst on holidays there, and checking out places to live we decided we will be renting an apartment instead of buying and we are moving out to Benidorm and retire early at the end of 2014. We want to enjoy ourselves for a few years (Hopefully)then maybe live somewhere a little quieter much later on in life.
You will find it difficult to find work there as many bars and businesses are closed down. Do your homework Dan, We wanted to live there some years ago but found it was impossible then never mind now! and this is the reason we waited until it was affordable to live there without working.
You can rent a basic one bed apartment for around 400 euros per calendar month then prices rise if you want better.
Then you will need to pay your other bills like leccy etc.
If you have some cash give it a go for a season

Best of luck on what ever you decide.

If you need to live on what you earn, forget it, there is an enormous unemployment problem in Spain, so people are happy to work for minimum wage, or even less, the employers get away with that by paying cash, and not having people on the books, but the problem, for the employees, is, if you are not on a contract, then you don't get healthcare coverge, neither do you get any benefits when you do loe your job.
As has been put on here before, the easiest way to become a millionairre in Spain, is to arrive with two million.

This is an article on finding work in Madrid - you have to remember though that it's a different market to that on the coast. One of the points the author makes is very relevant though:

http://moving2madrid.com/how-to-find-a-job-in-spain/

Tip #2: Differentiate yourself – Think about your “competitive advantage” as a foreigner and profesional and target relevant companies and jobs.
Incidentally the site itself is looking to hire someone, but again you need to be Madrid based, not on the coast

Additionally, for those thinking of going to Madrid and perhaps nervous of doing teaching but are prepared to work as an language auxiliar, it may be worth asking on the Facebook group "madridauxiliares", as there seem to be plenty of opportunities pop up on a daily basis.

As Concierge for the Spanish section of BE I would like to say hello and welcome.

BE is a very large expat website, so if you have problems finding your way around we have concierges who will try to direct you. The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums.

I have just returned from Benidorm. Although the place was full of people due to Christmas there did not appear to be a lot of thriving businesses. Many, many places have closed down.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Rosemary
