Moving to Southern Spain
#16
I`d second that, dont move down here without a job unless you have sufficient funds to live for a year then enough to relocate back to the UK if you cant find work.
It really is that tough at the moment.

How does everyone rate the rest of Andalucia for IT work? Say Seville for example?

This is a nice threat, guys - really hot.
Me and my partner are both working in IT sector and living around Madrid, but the situation here is no different than what you say about southern parts. I am freelancing for companies in Australia, but my husband is working for the US and the pay is very very low, so he has been looking around for a decent job here from the moment we came - still no luck. Having in mind that his Spanish is on a pretty high level - has a Delle diploma allowing him to teach Spanish to non-natives.
So unless anyone disagrees with me I would surely say that the IT jobs here are most probably not better than in Gib or anywhere in the South.

20% unemployment here, if you want a job in Spanish sector think you will be definately out of luck as they will take on a Spanish speaker.
Here where we are I would say unemployment is even higher, I agree with previous posters that have said make sure you bring enough money to last a year so if you need to go back to UK it wont be a problem, many from our area have gone back, all the ones that need to work, and we dont have many expats here.
I hope you are one of the lucky ones

As it happens I do speak good spanish and, with my qualifications in IT, this should hopefully put me in a better position

I can't add a great deal more to this thread to be honest, but echo what others have already said.
Do not move without first securing a job, or at least having plenty of spare money to keep you going for a good few month to a year.
Recruitment agencies in Gib are verging on criminally bad, and most companies are laying off IT staff at the moment. Certain IT roles here are always in demand though, mainly web devs, oracle DBAs and 1st line cheap as chips support!!!
IT security is not embraced very well here, in fact, most of the IT is a bit "backward" and antiquated!
