Moving small stuff UK to Spain?
#1
Hi to all, my first posting here
My partner and I are moving over to Benamargosa, Andalucia, in September. We are driving down with our 3 dogs in our campervan and are looking for the cheapest and safest way to get our boxes moved over there. We aren't taking any furniture as the house we're renting in Spain is furnished so it would be just clothes, crocks etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
JnK

There are several firms that will sell space in a removals van, eg 5 cubic metres.
Be warned, and watch out for a couple of points. We were told one price over the phone, for the total deal, and then received a bill for £100 more. (We told them exactly where they could put that.) Count all the boxes, chairs etc, and put a numbered label on each one. They may do that too, but it pays. They miscounted everything, and claimed there were two less packages than we had reckoned, so I made them unpack the lorry and recount to prove me right. Had I put my own labels on, I would have been saved the worry that I might have been wrong.
They sell space, not weight usually, so ensure everything is packed as densely as poss.
If you are out in the wilds, email them a map with everything clearly on it.
Don't trust to them arriving on the date agreed. We arrived three days before they were due, and they turned up the next morning without so much as a warning phone call. Equally they could have been late.
Anyway, hope that helps.

Hi and welcome to BE, I have sent you a private message but you will have to post twice more before you can pick it up, just post saying any old thing we don't care as most of us do that anyway. To collect the PM look to the top right hand of you screen and click Private Message. Good Luck.

Thanks all for the help. And to try and answer the questions
No, the campervan is quite small and with the two of us and 3 dogs already an awning is needed for sleeping. Towing isn't an option for me as we're two females and towing something on top of driving the campervan doesn't appeal at all!
And to Crispy, thanks I will post again and pick up the PM. Thanks.

Couldn't resist, Go on, so whats being female got to do with towing something

Then you have two choices maybe
Firstly, pay one of the man in a van re loads to bring it down at anything around £70 - £90 a cbm, or secondly use a one way van hire company and drive down in convoy.

For Grebo - if you'd ever seen me towing you wouldn't be asking me that

With quite a few stories of bad removal companies, I can recommend a family company in Tiverton Devon. They brought a part load for me, phoned me when they were close and kept 100% to their plan and estimate. Part loads by definition wait for enough other stuff to fill the van but if you can live with that, google Wotton and get a quote.

Thanks El Capitan will do that. Our biggest problem now seems to be whether or not the house will sell before it loses its value altogether

well I must be good for a female then
towed the horse trailer (with 2 horse) from 1 side of Spain to the other, and yes I can reverse it
got the hang of reversing the little trailer too
JnK, it would probably be cheaper to buy a small triler, tow it (its only the reversing thats hard) and bring the stuff yourselves

I have been known to get out, move the trailer, back the car and then hook it up again. The counter intuitive steering messes with my head every time.

Reversing is "simple" logic and all the more fun when you dont look round but rely only on mirrors. I used to shift boats as a part time business and reckoned I could slot my trailer into most gaps. Too heavy to unhitch and man-handle when there is up to 4.5 tonnes sitting on top. Did manage to remodel the rear of the range rover once when I had a big thing stern on first for balance and as close to the back of the range rover as possible. Reversed nicely into place then when I got out and unhitched I noticed that both corners of the range rover were neatly dented where the stern of the boat had made contact.
