Moving to Marbella - Adivce Needed
My partner and I are planning on moving to Marbella in the next few months through renting a property. We were wondering which area of Marbella is most popular with British Expats and what the standard of life is there?
My partner works offshore at the moment and he will continue to do this when we move to Marbella. I was wondering what employment was like out in Marbella? I am currently a Marketing Assistant and I have experience in Administration. I would be looking for a job similar to this but I cannot speak Spanish. Any advice is greatly appreciated :) |

Let's hope, as someone else said, your partner's income is ok to support the both of you and you get settled and achieve the life you want. I know it probably sounds as though I'm not bothered - actually I do wish you well, I just hope you reconsider your employment prospects;) |

I suggest you re-read my edited version of your post.... spot the problem? I'm sorry if this is a little facetious but there's a crisis going on.

You do not have to speak spanish to get a job here. It helps if you want a job where spanish is needed but there are jobs where you don't need to speak spanish. Also whilst you are out here doing a job that doesn't require speaking spanish believe me or not you can actually 'LEARN' to speak spanish while you are here. (a lot of people on here learned spanish when they got here). There is a crisis but if your other half has a job that can support you then I am quite sure there is a crisis inthe UK that will make you want to move elsewhere. Somewhere like here and I hope you succeed. Oh yeah baby...!!!:thumbsup:
Fiona man, that post is so belittling, how awful. Give someone a chance eh?? Now, I know (well actually keep hearing, there's a difference) there may be jobs in which you don't need to speak Spanish - though am always amazed at that. I know someone in Fuengirola, with an entirely English-speaking clientele whose receptionist/office person for a long time - I 've known them well over two years - had barely any Spanish (nor did the principals of the business). A couple of months back she was no longer on the payroll and they have a Spanish/English replacement. She can deal with whatever comes her way, whether it's phone calls, deliveries, etc etc. I still boggle that there are any jobs not needing Spanish at all. Anyway, that's enough on that methinks. OP can take or leave my, your or anyone's ponderings, after all! |

Such the optimist. It's ok for some to move over but not the rest eh. Prat. Don't be so miserable.
However, if someone has an alternative income then its great. Yes there are a few jobs, but most unskilled jobs are cash in hand - on the black type jobs, which arent secure or reliable as a main income and mean you dont enter the social security system. Down in Marbella, there are a few call centre type jobs for british speakers, mostly part time and mostly commission only and not particularly fun or long term. I worked in a couple of them. I certainly wouldnt have been able to live on my income, but as a second income its ok Jo xxxx |

There's a serious economic crisis in Southern Europe, with unemployment rates much higher than in the UK, and many future ex-pats don't seem to realize this.... Even if one salary is sufficient for the couple, there's the question of healthcare insurance, since "partners" aren't covered by their OH's social security. The OP should look into this carefully, as any reciprocal S.S. agreement between Spain and the UK won't be eternal, and she'd have to budget for private healthcare insurance in case she doesn't find declared work. Fore-warned is fore-armed!:) |

Re: Moving to Marbella - Adivce Needed
The places associated with expats generally mean the rental prices are a bit higher (although does mean you get more modern accommodation). They are also generally urbanisations with very little in the way of a soul/amenities. The most popular places are Neuva Andalucia, Elviria, Calahonda & Riviera
If you are used to living in a town in the UK you would be better off moving to Marbella town itself which although very Spanish you will still get by fine. Quality of life down here is great, in fact Marbella itself seems to be in a nice little non-crisis bubble and you wouldn't really know there were such issues going on We might have a temp position coming up soon for an English only speaking marketing assistant so please drop me an email/pm |
