Mopeds in Spain

I'm after some advice which (as per usual) the authorities can't agree on.
  • What is the maximum (legal) speed - some say 45 and some say 60
  • I know you can't ride on AP or A roads but what other restrictions are there? Some say dual carriageways, some say any roads with blue signs - where can I find the rules?
  • What are the restrictions regarding passengers? I seem to recall that you have to be 18 to take passengers but some say not.

I've read the 'official' manual for doing the theory test and it doesn't answer these questions.

Thanks in advance.

It is definitely 45kph and 18 years old to carry passengers.

This is the definition from the General Vehicle Regulations - Annexo 2

Ciclomotor de dos ruedas: Vehículo de dos ruedas, provisto de un motor de cilindrada no superior a 50 cm3, si es de combustión interna, y con una velocidad máxima por construcción no superior a 45 km/h.

Thanks for that - I'd already found the tumbit link, as you say, some useful info.

Still can't find any thing about what roads one can drive on though.

One thing I find strange is they are allowed to cross the frontier into Gibraltar.

What I also find strange is that push-bikes are allowed on some major roads (provided they stay to the right of the white line) whilst mopeds are not:confused::confused:

what I find strange is......

they are allowed to cross Red traffic lights

they are allowed to be used on pedestrian walkways

they ignore road works

they don't all wear helmets

they seem to be bought without any sense of fear installed

Mum - I must have one

About the only definitive rule I can find is that they are prohibited on motorways - apart from that it seems to depend on other factors like the width of the hard shoulder.

This is worth a read:- http://goo.gl/1j3Ck

There seems to be far fewer on the roads now.
Let's hope it stays that way.:fingerscrossed:

There just seems less to me. ( I am talking about the noisy ones the kids rev up needlessly)
Perhaps my ears have turned off to them.

Re: Mopeds in Spain

I thought it was compulsory in Spain to have an inadequate silencer and make as much noise as you can with your clapped out Moto. Along with riding round and round the village endlessly riding like a complete idiot and popping an uncontrolled wheelie whenever you see a none Spaniard and blipping the throttle as you pass my front door:frown:
Don't get me wrong I have been a motorcyclist since childhood and at a guess would say that most of the bikes I have had have had a more powerful starter motor than these Spanish Motos, however I don't think I have owned one that made as much dam noise as the Spanish kids manage.

I swear a moped once stopped in front of me as I was about to cross a road beside the park and FIVE young boys got off.

(I doubt any of them were of age to carry passengers.)
