Mercadonna - curiosity
I went to Mercadonna in Gandia today and was taken by surprise when they made an announcement in English and then in Spanish and it made me wonder whether this happens in other areas too. I presume that it is because they have a lot of English people shopping there but maybe it is a foible of the manager.

though at the Jazz Festival at the weekend the announcements about not filming were in Valenciano, then Castellano, then English

Lots of most nationalities here so the local Mucky has two fluent German speakers, one of whom does announcements in foreign. There is a pre-recorded tape in English which advertises the meat counter, and there is also a fluent English speaker, spotting her is a challenge, she wears the union flag proudly but usually is in the bakery. They don't get paid extra for their language skills.

I've been in 2 Mercadonas in our area where the announcements for opening hours, closure dates etc have been in English followed by Spanish.
Lots of Brits, Dutch, German and Scandinavian expats here.

The Leroy Merlin store in Gandia has pre-recorded announcements in English extolling the virtues of its products. Presume they get a lot of expat DIYers doing up their new abodes. We certainly spent a fair bit there when we first bought our place.

The only English I have ever heard in one of the Mecadonas around here was a young girl in a broad Birmingham accent shouting "Mum, I can't find no lard !".

Never heard announcements in anything but Spanish in any of our branches. There did use to be a charming young man on the fish counter who always spoke to me in English, with the loveliest smile - I do miss him!

I use three different Mercadonas, in Oliva, Pego and Ondara, all of them have had these announcements for a few weeks.

You are just making that up, who uses lard these days, especially on holiday. I used to stay away from Mankydonnas whatever language they used

Truth ! Afterwards, out of interest I started looking for it in supermarkets, and think I found it once in a Condis supermarket in a round white tub marked Llard. Mind you it could have been Catalan for something completely different.

I beg your pardon!! I'll have you know I spent most of last Christmas trudging round Gandia and Oliva looking for lard with which to make a Gala Pie for Boxing Day treat. Eventually gave up and used butter and what a corker of a pie. (See attached picture, couldn't figure out how to embed the image.)
There is a British food shop in Oliva and they said they'd been trying to source lard for ages but couldn't get any.

In our part of the Costa Blanca, all annoucements for sales promotion are in Spanish and English but to be honest, the English version is that bad I have less difiiculty understanding the Spanish version.

The Anglification has spread to the local hospital, whose staff will phone with issues relating to appointments and speak English from the start.
