Marine Engineer

Hi....

My cousin has just left our house to start her new life in Spain and has put ideas into our heads about moving to Spain ourselves....

Husband is a Marine Diesel Engineer ( ships and boats engines ) and is currently looking at starting up his own business, we currently live in Poole, Dorset so perfect location for this country... Can any one give some tips into locations in Spain that a marine engineering business could maybe work....

Thanks :)

Hi Phil and Chele,

the east and south coasts are fairly well served with mairine engineers but the costa de la luz has a distinct lack. Of english speaking ones anyway. If you check the thread on Costa Esuri Ayamonte you will seem some interesting marina facts and when the marinas have been completed there will be a fair number of vessels new to the area all needing attention. If your chums do come out let me know as I am a yacht surveyor and who knows we may be able to work together.

Regards

Mallorca, more specifically Palma, I did find a marine engineer job online for a mate a while back and I remember that there was a bit of a demand over there for them.

Valencia would be a good place to look, as the America's cup lands there very soon the marine industry is absolutely booming.

But the harbor they built will be full of big boats with diesel engines in no time. Probably! Actually this is good advice, IMHO, a new harbor, like the one in Valencia, will likely create new jobs.

I enjoy sailing too and I assure you fixing and maintaining a diesel engine is not cheap at all. Without mentioning all those inspections and silly things you need to buy to comply with the regulations.

My guess... your profession in Spain looks good, or at least much much better than the ones related to real estate...

Re: Marine Engineer

I would personally E-mail some of the boat maintenance companies in Spain, pick a few areas, and see what gets offered, then worry about where your going when you know more.

Hi.... Phil here...

Thanks for the replies... they have helped to give further food for thought.

The area is going to have to play an important factor as we also have 3 children aged 18, 15 & 4 - the eldest 2 are into their watersports, our 18 yr old is studying to be come a watersports instructor... The 15 year old has another year left at school and currently doing her GCSE's... has any one moved over there with children of this age and how did they cope...:)
