Default Mallorca, kids and schooling

Hi there, ive read many of the posts on here about schooling in Mallorca from a few years back. We are a UK family with two kids (11 and 8) considering the move over to Mallorca (for various reasons)

We do not have to look for work on the island so we can be flexible on areas to live, however we are looking at various options for schooling which may decide where to locate initially ...

We would love to hear opinions on the schooling available out there - as I understand, many Brits send to international schools - however, there is the expense to consider and also making friends within a more local community.

My children do not speak any spanish but we are open to state and private spanish schools. But have read many negative views on state schools with regard to the quality of schooling for the kids and ability to make friends etc.

We are also considering home-schooling on the island and have already made contact with a few families in Mallorca who are doing this successfully...

Our thoughts are that our move to Mallorca will enable our kids to have a different lifestyle - more outdoors, less X Box, become bilngual .. and many other ideas which am sure you can all relate to.

Would love to hear from any families with kids who are schooling in Mallorca and how they are finding it.... language / transiton / making new friends etc.

Thanks in advance
xxx

So, in 2011 you were moving to Portugal, 2012 it was to be Canada, now Spain. Homeschooling will have a less positive affect on them learning Spanish as they will not have the interaction with other kids, the 8 yr old should be OK in a state school, and by 9 almost completely bilingual, the 11 yr old amy be a little old for state school to become fluent by the time the next level comes along.

Have you thought about what will be the situation of your children when they reach school leaving age? University? Work possibilities?

Remember also that home schooling isn't entirely legal! There might be some already doing it, but that doesn't make it legal.

I would say that at 11 your eldest will not be able to cope with the rigours of secondary school whilst not knowing any of the language being spoken. In my opinion, an international school is essential.

International school? Typically €1000 per month minimum. Public school? Nix. Big difference. Spanish lessons: €100/mo. Think about it.

Private schools across Spain tend to be a bit cheaper than €1000 per month

They start at around €500-600 per month including transport, meals and textbooks

We have the number 1 ranked school in Spain here in Oviedo, and it is only €700 per month. I wouldn´t send my kids there though, they either make´em or break ´em

It is really important to ask yourself whether your children would be happy at a certain school. Some are very religious, some put loads of pressure on the children, some have very challenging kids at them. Some have no qualified teachers. The Q is bigger than whether the school teaches in Spanish or English
