Default Malaga. Artist asking for work.

Hope I am not breaking any forum rules.

I am still waiting for a replacement passport after losing everything in Barcelona. I have work in Ibiza soon, so need an emergency travel document to cross port boundaries even within Spain. Euro 120 + ferry ticket and travel.

I need to cover costs by working in Malaga whilst dealing with the consular office. Find me in the streets, or call/email me - details on my blog linked to below. Sketches, murals, paintings - onsite, or from photographs. Examples of my work can aslo be seen on my blog.

Any support greatly appreciated. Hope I haven't broken any rules.

Thanks.

P.S. I am not nearly as badly behaved and ugly as my blog suggests!

I think I'm still wearing the same clothes!

Things have progressed much since then. Can't really believe how this has worked out even through 'crisis' (although, there have been tough times my memory allows me to forget). Off to Ibiza (hopefully soon) to work on a couple of nice personal projects and initiate a community art event for 'off season' locals amusement. Then I head to Mexico, California, Arizona, possibly more... Canada, Alaska. You don't do it for the money, but the lifestyle suits me just fine for the time being (I have been saying that for almost 10 years now).

Tough recovery from losing everything in Barcelona, but I actually have work of sorts lined up for Two years from January!

Hope all is good with you.

---------

I think you're right - I am a little fatter and stuff than I was back then. The girls still love me mind (so I am told!).

Looked at your blog. Beautiful writing. And love your paintings! I'd run a mile if I saw you in the street because you remind me of my ex husband. That's a compliment in some ways. Except my ex didn't do as much with his talent. I hope that the money comes! If it comes to us first I'll commission a painting straight away! Unfortunately we are always on the edge too. Best wishes. Someone else on here who has money and walls to hang paintings on..... Commission a painting or two from this guy. You'll be glad you did! Would you have bought a painting from Van Gogh or Monet back in their day? Would you now? Think about it.

OK. I am now in Malaga.

Last night I missed the last bus by Five minutes. I bought a ticket for the first morning bus (7 am). Sitting in the station I managed to stay awake until about Six. Bus station security were arseholes, so I filed a complaint before falling asleep. Woke just as bus was leaving.

Waste of money. Waste of time.

This evening I got the 8pm bus, but it was a bit 'retarded'. Not me this time - the bus was 'retarded'. If the bus hadn't been retarded I would probably have been late and missed it.

Are we allowed to say 'retarded' today? Even here in Spain? Even if it is just about buses?

Police allowing, I will be working in Plaza La Merced tomorrow.

Malaga has changed much in places since I last visited. Interesting city.

While you're in Málaga have a look at the barrio Soho (near the port) - they're trying to establish it as a bohemian/artistic zone and you might find customers and contacts there. Sometimes they have a litle market near the CAC, it's probably happening regularly now in the run-up to Christmas. I know that getting an official spot is likely to be expensive but to be nearby might be useful

Good luck and if you're still there in early Jan I'll pop by.

Plaza la Merced.

Something I really enjoy about my ... erm ... 'job'? is that I actually get to study a place. Absorb it in a way most visitors don't. I also get to chat to many locals. They give me the history (there are many versions of course).

Plaza la Merced. I like this place. The monument is in memory of 49 who died fighting against the fascist regime in 1831. A group of liberals massacred on the beach of Malaga for standing up to the Royal twats of their time.

So many times I come across these sort of monuments in Spain. Almost all bare an English name amongst those listed and remembered. There is always a crazy English guy freedom fighting. On one hand, I sort of think this is not much more than suicide. On the other, I feel proud to be British. Salute Robert Boyd - he was a man and a half, and Malaga will always remember him. I guess we all know about Orwell, but this was long before then. Robert Boyd. I raise a glass now.

I get the history that would otherwise pass me by. Just for sketching. Simple things make my artist life very enjoyable. The money will come in time. It bloody well has to. €120 friggin' for a friggin' emergency travel document just to get to my next job. Long time since I can recall saving that much cash.

Onwards and upwards.

More than any other city I have visited in Europe, Malaga has got it going on. Every possible aspect, every perspective, every angel - they have got it right. It is a pleasure to be here. Huge potential for an artist like myself. Everywhere I look there is a sketch, a painting, a something.

Long time since I last visited, and it was just a short bus ride from Granada all the time. Most of us see nothing more than Malaga airport. Treat it as a hub to get to wherever we are going, but it deserves much more. The vibe here is very natural, chic, cosmopolitan (all of those words). It is a fabulous city reaching a peak.

Nice here. Very nice.

I've always liked the city of Málaga

I learnt Spanish in plaza de la merced and got my first job after university in an insurance company next to the cathedral (over 10 years ago now). My wife worked for a year in Pedregalejo.

It is without doubt the best thing about the Costa del sol, given that it really isnt the Costa del sol at all

I remember once I was playing football with some English lads and mentioned that I was going for lunch in Málaga and they looked at me gone out. "You what, you might get stabbed" In all their years living on the Costa del sol they had never once gone to Málaga city because apparently is dangerous. I have no idea where they got that idea from

A wonderful city

It is a wonderful city.

However, so far I have been confronted with a broken bottle thrust to my face. Some guy got very agro with me last night. Cigarette tax is as high as it gets in Spain (every pack you buy, you have to give at least Five away). Plenty of crazies here. When you work on the street as much as I do, you have to learn to deal with this stuff in a very calm way. The only other option is hospital. Malaga is a dangerous city. It is also a very wonderful city.

Back to Robert Boyd. A little more research reveals that he was actually Irish. Not English. Like so many 'freedom fighters' he came from a very priviledged background. Sent away from a wealthy family to fight for the true cause. He died, and consequently became the founder of the first Protestant cemetary in Spain. You have to wonder whether he was just a wrongun the family wanted rid of???

Me? Somehow got on a rum mission last night. Horribly hungover poisoned. I am about €2 closer to my €260 mission for emergency travel documents and tickets to Ibiza. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

It is a port city. Port cities are always very 'interesting'!

OK. Still asking for work.

Just about covering daily costs (bed, food, tobacco, beer and more beer) whilst waiting for manaña to actually happen.
