Madrid... from the airport.

Hi, just a quick one, We are flying into Madrid, might go on metro to Bernabeau first or get a taxi, does anyone know how much a taxi costs from the airport to the centre. It seems the metro will be about 7€ each...
Thanks

You say you're heading to the Bernabeu? If you're going to a sporting event you could well end up in an almighty traffic queue that inflates the taxi fare (although the metro would be heaving too).
My guess would be 25-30 Euros, but the taxi drivers at the airport are notorious for being variable in their charges. I've normally been lucky in the past when I've caught a taxi from the airport, but there again I can speak Spanish.

A pleasure
If you're going from the airport Line 8 takes you directly to Nuevos Ministerios. If you get off here, one of the exits is onto the Paseo Castellana (should be a shopping centre/centro comercial of name "Moda shopping") just opposite the stadium. I personally would do this instead of changing lines and taking Line 10 one further stop up. However Nuevos Ministerios is a bit of a maze, so you may feel safer doing that.

One small problem - easily overcome, but a niggle all the same. The bloody metro station at the airport is bloody miles away from the main terminals (Ok, maybe I exaggerate, but you get the picture).
However, once you get there, buy an Abono Metrobus. This is a ticket that will allow you travel on both buses and metro. You can choose the number of journeys (it use to be just 10, but I believe there are now more options).
In this respect, you get the metro to Nuevos Ministerios as suggested, and look for the exit that says Paseo Castellana. Once out of there, if you don't fancy the walk - which isn't that far but not too close either in 40º heat - you can jump on any one of a number of buses which, for the most part all pass the Bernabeu (the 27 is the most frequent passing every few minutes). Remember you need to be going north not south, and if your bearings are lost, just look up the street for two tall towers/skyscrapers leaning into each other which represent Plaza Castilla. That's the direction you want.
On the taxi front, I disagree with Stevie on this as Madrid taxis are so highly regulated, the drivers don't take the same kind of calculated risks they may have done 10-15 years ago. The prices are stated - in Spanish and English - on the side of the back seat windows. They now cannot charge any old surcharge for going to the airport, instead there is a fixed rate (not too high either) and a baggage charge if you put bags in the boot. From Airport to centre, I have paid €25 but that was from an outlying suburb to the south of the city and was a long way away. €20 would be about right - and that is pretty much from the centre, which niether Nuevos Ministerios or Bernabau is given that they are much closer to the airport.

Fortaleza is quite right - it is quite a walk from the terminals to the Metro station at the airport. However, they do have those moving pavement things, so you can take it easy if you like.
