Two Brit Bars (although one its way out), Chippie and one Brit supermarket. Thats it. Gypsies, a few, but I suspect no more than in other inland towns and villages. Resentment from local Spaniards to English? Not experienced any in the three years we have been here, but then we avoid the Brit bars, try to experience the Spanish lifestyle and most importantly try to communicate in Spanish.

I hardly ever went to El Grande, so my comments are hearsay, altho I did work at Picnics for a while and many of the customers would talk about Gypsies and the local Spanish with derision (in fact they didnt like anything and constantly moaned about England, Spain, people.......... you name it, they moaned about it LOL). It was also sort of known in De La Torre (I much preferred going there), that the Brits in El Grande didnt get on with the local Spanish there and there were a lot of gypsies.

I do know that when my son went to the feria last year, he and his friends were set upon by some spanish lads (gypsies), my son came home early because of it, but one of his friends ended up being badly beaten!

A regretable incident, but unfortuntely people experience these problems in any number of cities, towns and villages worldwide and for all manner of reasons. Alhaurin is still suffering a poor reputation in most peoples eyes for the actions of one British nutter years ago. In the last year, there were more incidents in Mijas, but that is still a quaint, pretty and safe place

true, I guess in the end you stay within areas that you find comfortable and as you say, most areas have their bad bits. We moved down to Benalmadena thinking it was a rough place, full of rowdy tourists ( handy for the childrens school and my work), but the part we lived in wasnt anything like that

@jojo, what was picniks is now an indian, the crazy cod has gone.

We are not bar people so do not tend to go into town other than shopping so not best placed to say how much work there is within the town, I just know that there is very little "British" influences left.

Hi, I hope Alhaurin isn't rough?, I used to love living there but I want to feel safe as I will be moving there on my own. I think I am going to come over in May and hopefully find a job when I am out there! I used to love Jo Tape but that closed a couple of years ago. I used to live above the restaurant El Porton, do you know it? I know a fair few people in Alhaurin so looking forward to seeing some friendly faces!

I dont know that restaurant, but it has changed significantly, certainly in the four years I've known it. The last time I was there, yes it felt quite rough and a bit desperate. But I guess it depends where you go and who you associate with. I know a lot of lovely people there too.

The best thing. as you're doing is to come over and see what you find, stay if you find work and like it, leave if you dont

my local village/market town has shops all over the place that have closed. There are started shops and flats above that are not finished, houses and flats not finished.
When going into some shops there is a look of desperation, frantic hope you will spend money, just something to make their day.
Bars are closing their shutters and not re-opening.
Even the gestor at the end of the street has got a Se Vende up in his window.

the only ones working are those who can get time on the olive trees and the local maintenance shops that are keeping the olive machinery and trailers working.
last night there was a news item on Spaniards working in London.

not a very happy time at all.

Yes, things are bad, but lets not get too carried away

Apparently 500,000 people left Spain last year - and 450,000 people entered

Out of the 500,000 who left, only about 10% were Spanish. So it is more a case of the foreigners going home, rather than Spaniards leaving

On the news the other day they said that "100s" of people have left Spain to look for work in Germany in the past 12 months. Hundreds isnt many is it?

Wow that doesn't sound good, would you not recommend moving back there then? It doesn't sound like anyone is happy there at the minute?

Hi Cricketman, do you live in Alhaurin? How is the job front there? I am looking to move back there by May but by the sounds of things it is not a very happy place?

Hi Lizzie

No I don't. I have been maybe 5 times so no great expert. I live in Benalmádena Pueblo.

It's difficult to say whether there will be a job or not. Depends what you are willing to except. I still see signs saying "se busca dependienta/camarera" from time to time around this area, but not very often

As Concierge for the Spanish section of BE I would like to say hello and welcome.

BE is a very large expat website, so if you have problems finding your way around we have concierges who will try to direct you. The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums.

Please let me know if you need any further help.
