Rude? Grow up.

I am not going to get caught up in a silly tit-for-tat here.

Hopefully the poster will wake up before it’s too late.

I’ve said all I’m going to say.

what a pity you cant take advice from people who know more about the subject than yourself, and have seen many fall by the wayside.

You said you had given your money to your wife and was "struggling to make ends meet".Hence it wasnt an unreasonable assumption that you had no cash.

I said "it appears you have no experience...." as you said you had experience of "working" in restaurants, which is a far cry from owning or managing one.

You said you were planning to go there to do "market research" hence I assume you havent done any yet. Kind of odd to prepare business plans without having previously done some market research.

I am always ready to listen to entrepreneurs as I am an investor myself. However, without even seeing your plans, but merely reading your reactions, I think you have no chance of getting the finance you require.

You have your head in the clouds, so go for it. Have fun with the bureaucracy in setting yourself up, and employing people there. I have to make one more assumption and that is you are fluent in Spanish as nobody in their right mind would normally consider opening a restaurant the size you are talking about, if they weren't.

Of course I have done some market research but only what I have been able the gather from here. The remaining information I need can only be gathered there.
I am struggling to make ends meet but that does not mean I don't have a little nest egg put away. I am aware of the bureaucracy of setting up a business in Spain as my grandparents lived there for 10 years and my grandfather had his own business there with employee's until he sadly died of a heart attack. I have spoken in great length with my Nan on the subject and have meetings planned for when I arrive.
Once again I thank you for your pessimism and assumptions.

to add to post#19

Paul, I'm old & have owned & run businesses, including worked in (managed & operated) start-up's as well as shutting the losers down. Its all painful, yet many start up's actually make a success of it through discipline, determination, hard work, management & funding

As an investor, I would want to know

- the risks

- Where else have you tried to get funded & why were you refused?

- Have you tried being your own business person before, if so what happened?

- Are you or will you be mortgaging the farm & the family to do this - do you have any personal money that you'd be ploughing into this venture?

- How are you going to earn a living paying yourself from the start up?

- Is the investor just a venture capitalist (loan you money & can expect to lose it?)

- Can you run & manage it all by yourself?

That post by dfjordan contained a lot of things you obviously do not want to look in the face. The point about the lack of similar menus to you is a good one. Just as a point of curiosity, do you have any idea of the start up costs and I do not mean the premises but the permits for just about everything? Who is going to facilitate them? You say professionals are not your thing, well I hope your Spanish is up to it because interpreters are going to bite your capital big time, No, this isnt putting you down, just letting you know from hard won experience some of the paperwork nightmare you will be undertaking. Horlicks may love people bigging you up but some of us like you to know what is in store for you. Do you have any idea of the hoops you will have to jump through simply to get the doors open? I hope your business plan includes all of the Spanish regulations on tax, autonomo, employment contract costs and so on because from what you say, you have a business plan but havent even got to Marbella! If it doesnt include the many thousands you are going to have to fork out before you even get a sign above the door, it's not a realistic business plan, is it?

Ok, well it's your idea and someone else's money. I wish you luck of it, would be nice to see you back here in a year or so and prove the people who live out here to be wrong. I certainly hope you do because I think if anyone can make a go of a business here it is despite the Spanish, not because of them and you will be justly proud of what you achieve.

Suerte!

Come on you lot! The man is struggling to make ends meet in the UK, he doesn't like the weather, he wants your money and lots of it so that he can spend all his time working.

He won't be seeing the weather or much of the kids, will he? Come on now cough up and stop asking irritating questions, he has a life to lead.

The previous owner of the restaurant quit due to a "heart attack" the poster's own Grandfather died of a heart attack, can you see a pattern?

This is your chance to make a fortune or be lead up the garden path of life but whichever, it will be very interesting, so fart or get off the pot:lol:

Best of luck jonboy

Re: Looking for a Investor

I've refrained from posting as I have no intention investing in the OP's project. but after reading all 5 pages of the thread I'm starting to think the OP could possibly be a troll.

Reasons for thinking this? well a previous poster mentioned the coincidence of the two 'heart attacks' comments, another poster the highlighted the the 'struggling to make ends meet' comment, the OP said he gave everything to his ex, then turns around and implies he has a 'nest egg' finally there was the deafening silence when asked if he spoke Spanish.

Finally I do question the OP's business savvy if he thinks by posting anonymously on an internet forum that he is likely to find investors a in a bunch of mainly OAP's living in Spain.

It's no big deal to me either way as a troll thread always makes interesting reading for lurkers et al.

Re: Looking for a Investor

It's not I had disappeared or anything along those lines. I have had enough of arguing the you people. I have 15,000 pounds of my own money I am investing and you people just think it ok to ridicule accuse and make assumptions, then to top it off you mock the death of my grandfather like it a f$#&ing joke. He is buried in a wall just outside Benidorm if you care to go and take a look. His name was Richard Hames, ex Military police man, a great man that I miss dearly. You should be ashamed of yourselves for mocking someone who was just wanting to make a change. Who are the real trolls here. Go f@#$ yourselves. I have requested for the thread to be removed as I no longer wish to bicker with twisted bitter people that thing have not worked out for. I will not be posting anymore comments.

Re: Looking for a Investor

Sorry you didn't get the replies you were hoping for, all that experience and pointing out the pitfalls you may encounter were all you were ever going to get from here. It's called help, telling you the things you need to hear, not the things you want to hear.
Your 'plan' is more of a dream, we all have those but asking other people to pay for them isn't realistic, a bit like your vision of what you would experience.

There was sound advice on this topic, you chose to know better. Good luck.

That might just be enough to pay for your flights over, a removals truck, a 1 month deposit on a property and well... not much else

The restaurant market in Marbella is saturated and you need a lot of money invested to leave a footprint - maybe half a million euros

Marbella is actually a very Spanish town with lots of well-off Spanish tourists. If you just want English speaking tourists then you will struggle and may be better off with the 100s of other British restaurants that are failing in Fuengirola or Torremolinos

There are a lot of forum users who like to "express their opinion" and a few others who seem intent on upsetting new users. Once you can see through that, this forum has some useful tips and info that you can take with you. I joined the forum for info on a particular subject and find it quite handy for that, likewise I do my best to post info useful for others, but based on my practical experience, not my "opinion". Good luck with your research anyway.

Good luck to OP , but I think it is a lovely dream that probably wouldn't work out.

I can't believe some smart Alec hasn't said "I'm Out" yet !

I just think that people shouldn't get too upset and what can you expect when you post on BE asking for an investor. I don't think posters were offending anyone and sometimes people need to wake up. It's good to have dreams, but at the end of the day this is a forum (open to comments). I've had some clashes too, but also enjoyed the open discussions. A lot of the time we have posters who want to live their dream, but forget they have kids. If a parent keeps moaning that life is crap in the UK and everything will be better in Spain, kids will believe it too. All we do is make people aware that there are a lot of other things to consider.

I live in the area and have more than 30 years in the industry so I obviously know sweet FA compared to the experts on here so i will just offer 1 piece of advice to the OP.
You may make money in the summer, you will lose money in the winter so make sure you save enough in the summer to get you through the rest of the year.
