Of course all spanish women aren't fat (the ones from Madrid etc. are quite elegant). Andalucian women are shorter and more inclined to put it on, it's the Moorish genes. Neither are all British youths yobs. It is clearly evident that many posters on here don't read or watch spanish news. Either that or they prefer to supress what they know:blink: e.g. did you hear about the drop in crime figures the other day and how Spain continues to be one of the safest countries in Europe? Or how Spain is the country that has the best record at reducing road deaths over the past 5 years, so now road safety is actually above average for Europe. Yes, despite what many British people say, Spain is one of the safer countries in Europe in which to drive! Btw, there is very little evidence that the average Andalucian has more Moorish genes than any other European. Genetic studies have show that there are more North African genes in the "white" populations of France or Britian than in Spain. Middle aged Andalucians are probably short becuase they had a poor diet 35-40 years ago while they were small children. Before the Franco years, Spain had a reputation for having a tall population, much in line with the Netherlands. I remember seeing that article in El Pais, dig it out if you like :) |

Anyway maybe if you googled more and read fewer English-based Costa Del Sol newspapers you'd be able to put things in context a little better |

I can tell from your posts that you have a very high-powered job which enables you to spend all your working day on a forum defending spains reputation. I shall bow to your superior knowledge of absolutely everything:p |

Re: Living in Spain - the good things!
I’m neutral on this. I watched the Spanish news this morning, as I do every morning, and there was a couple from Andalucia walking around their house up to their knees in mud. Then there were scenes of snow in Majorca and Barcelona and I got depressed and switched it off. I tried La Sexta but that was in English.
It was nice to see Prince Felipe in Chile. Now there’s a tall Spaniard, didn’t the family escape when the Moors were around? But to be honest, the Moors were here for 300 years, they must have left something behind, surely? Imagine if the Germans had been in the UK for 300 years – we’d all have blue eyes. |

I watch the news every day on TVE1 and La Sexta and I have to say that you're very selective on what you hear and report back on this forum.

And there is a huge difference of the spanish people in Asturias. The history is very celtic as the Moors never conquered Asturias. You don't see many dark and olive skinned spanish here. They are very fair skinned and many blondes and a fair few redheads, and tall too. I was quite surprised when I came, to be honest. (yes a bit of ignorance then) :) |

Interesting what you say about the genetics.

(yes a bit of ignorance then) :) There is little consensus on the history of the Moors and how much they interbred with the rest of the Spaniards. Some reports are that there were actually very few of them but they controlled the money and held offices of high power e.g. a bit like the presence of the British in India. However, once the Moors were overthrown then those that wanted to stay in Spain had to covert to Christianity and mix into the local population. Some "very dark" Spaniards have been shown to be a product of more recent immigration from North African then from the time of the Moors. From some recent genetic trials in seems that Spanish people are most similar to people from Britain and France. |

I mean who would want to live in a country where the bins are only emptied every second week? Its a wonder you haven't all died off, with black death or bubonic plague. Down here pal its much more civilised. Bins are emptied every day. Not only that but there are great bargains to be had if you get there early. Some folk even furnish their casas from the old basura,...others collect every day and set up S/H furniture stores. You can live of the land if you wish, with so much fruit and veg just growing wild. Lots of free accomodation, especially if you find yourself a nice little cosy cave. Dont worry about the recession,...leave your plastic cards back in blighty,...and the women here,...phew,...they are a class act pal,....not to be compared with your average East end slapper. Its all here on a plate,mate,...but if you prefer to sit there amongst your smelly old bins, and fork out arms and legs for the council tax,...while Gordon sends the whole darn country down the pan,....well,..best of luck pal,..you're welcome to it..... |
