Witnessed today at a bank locally, a British gentleman with a voice like John Savident (Fred Elliot off Coronation Street) getting more and more irate at the cashier.
"You need to put it in the computer... COMPUTER... C O M P U T E R" (there follows some pretend typing by said individual.)
The poor cashier remained extremely calm and explained (in Spanish) that he basically hadn't a clue what the guy was saying! This did nothing to quel the Brit, who got louder and more animated, until after still getting nowhere he got completely fed up and stormed out.
It's rare to meet a Brit inland who makes absolutely zero attempt to learn the language... after all, the shopkeepers only speak Spanish, the doctors only speak Spanish, the teachers only speak Spanish... etc, etc.
I wasn't the only Brit in that queue, but I can understand why none of us felt the desire to help...

I'm surprised that those working in a Bank can't speak English, I thought they'd be better educated.
I reckon the teller could speak English but was just being a twat, ignorant git.

Lets be honest, it's not like that in the UK every other house that comes on the market is being bought by a foreigner with three or four times the disposable income of the indigenous peeps is it? You can bet your paella pan that if that was the case EVERY bank over here would have some one in the branch that spoke at least a little of the incomers tongue. Go to Bradford or Bolton to see 21st century business in action.
