Mornin' all,
Do you get the dreaded "Levante" in your little part of paradise?

Yep, we´re having a good one, temperatures close to the 40´s, no wind, humid air and lots of people suffering from headaches. At the end of it there´s always some overcast or even a bit of rain. (which is a real relief!)

Re: Levante
Well, it is what it is. The strong wind usually do not reach our area, but in eg. Tarifa all the surfers are waiting for it.
Out here strong winds from the Southwest are called Poniente, and in Portugal´s Algarve the North winds are the so-called Nortada. In France you have the Mistral but I think those winds all over the place.
Happy Wiki-ing.

Re: Levante
I thought it was the name used for the strong wind that blows across Gibralter from the Med to the Atlantic at certain times of year very warm and strong. In mid May there were very strong winds at CE at certain times of day not always warm though quite cool from the North (off shore early morning) warmer from the South (on shore evening)

Hi all
Many many years ago I spent some time in Gibraltar. The 'Levanta', meaning 'its rises' is the name given to the cloud that sometimes sits over the top of the rock, it can be seen just hovering over Gib. in certain conditions. There was a name for the strong warm winds that carried red sand over from Africa as well but for the life of me I can't remember it.

I'd guess the sirocco, because of the dust.
Lynnxa's link above has a picture of the cloud you've mentioned.

Yes, sirocco, thats it. I really must take a trip down there, I am still in contact with one or two friends. Don't think its more that 4 to 4.5 hrs from C.E. Thanks for that. The picture brings back lots of lovely memories.
