Default Leaving Spain - NIE Number

When you leave Spain to return to UK or any other country do you need to "discard" your NIE number? If so, how do you do it? Will have nothing left in Spain, no property or bank account etc.

if you are not coming back don’t do anything.
about 12 years ago I went to Spain, opened a bank account and obtained NIE but the sale of the property we were buying fell through.
when we bought our property last year there was no trace of the NIE and we had to obtain another.

How strange - your NIE stays with you for life (in theory)

That is what we were led to believe. One reason given was that it may have been because both my wife and I have different passports From when we first obtained the NIE. Apparently the search is done on your passport number.

Forgot to add.. we had not kept a copy of the previous NIE either.

That is a common problem. Many NIEs were issued against your passport. Of course, UK passports have a new number every 10 years on renewal, so finding a "lost" NIE is almost impossible unless you know the passport number used when you first applied.

Perhaps Fred you can answer this. Are new NIE numbers being issued for British buyers just now or are applications being held back due to Brexit.New applicants will maybe have to rejoin a queue for non-EU citizens if the UK leaves later this month.

You should have completed the same form as used to apply for rsidencia but showing cancellation rather than application. I believe it will probably be redundant now after such a long time out of Spain?
