But if you were to kick the bucket, in whatever country, your wife would have to tell the DWP and start claiming a pension, or Income Support if she hadn't paid NI contributions to get a state pension in her own right, she couldn't just carry on receiving yours, could she? Otherwise she would be committing benefit fraud which I'm sure she wouldn't want to do.

As i said ..she would go back to the UK to live as we have family there.. So why does she need a spanish bank account..

She doesn't - she would just tell the DWP to pay her pension into her UK bank account. If you asked the DWP to pay your pension into your Spanish bank account so that you could avoid Spanish bank charges, you could still leave your UK current account open with a minimal balance in it, so assuming it's a joint account your wife could ask the DWP to pay her pension into it if she returned there.

:(

My Caixa branch takes 2.25€ maintenance charge every month, it would appear that each branch can please itself on charges. :sneaky:

didn't you ask them if there was any way of avoiding these charges - such as regular deposits, perhaps of your pension, as I suggested?

I have two pensions paid into my Caixa account every month....but I still have to pay a maintenance charge on the first of every month!

Sabadel/Solbank have an account called 'Expansion account'. If you have at least one pension paid into it you can get a 7% discount on all your direct debits. No charges to it that I can see.

ASee post 14.
There is a limit by the way, they dont pay a percentage all the way through, there is a cap. Correct, there are no charges to the account

I put in €100 and have paid my phone bill by direct depit.. is this normal as it looks like i will be paying just under €60 a year charges...

I have just been to my local branch to open an account for pensioners, although i have a general account.

what he did was convert my current account to the "free for pensioners" account, which means I don't have to have a new set of logins and account no etc.
I was advised that the UK retirement pension would have to come into the account every month and that any/all charges normally associated with running an account in Spain would no be made. This included cheque transactions, utility bill payment etc etc.
He said many people opened the account and then transferred their pension to another bank just to get the current "freeby". Then find they are being charged and get upset about it.

I have also noticed my local BBVA have a large advert in their window advising "Sin Comissiones para Pensionista" accounts

Yep, the cap is to a maximum discount of 20 euros per month.

As non-pensioners, we still benefit from free banking by paying in lump sums occasionally.

I shall be calling into my local branch just as soon as I can find the time, I already have two pensions paid into my account every month and have a large amount in my current account at all times....they have ripped me off for long enough and it's time they stopped charging me I think. :frown:

Good for you Meg

I forgot to say, the guy who I deal with said that if ever I should get charged for transactions to call in and see him and he would ensure it would be refunded and not happen again !!

so go to it gal, they have rules and have to obey them
if they have opened you into the right sort of account.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I am new to this site and don't know how to do a post..lol
I have just payed off my mortgage with laCaixa, and they told me the mortgage is paid off, but not canceled , this is in case I want to borrow money in the future. Has any one heard of that sort of thing before. Or is the bank doing something I should beware of.... :)

Re: La Caixa Bank

This is quite normal - it's so that they can easily place a charge against your property.

If you don't want this option, then you need to pay (quite a lot) to have the mortgage cancelled and the escitura (deeds) updated at the notary.
