Default Joint bank account

We had a joint bank account several years ago with some friends of ours who were non resident (we are resident) as we purchased a rental property together. This has since been closed.

We now need to open a joint bank account with a non resident for inheritance purposes. The bank has told us it is not possible to have a joint account with a non resident and a resident. Does anyone have any experience of this.

I don't have experience of what you ask but can't see how you can have a joint account between resident and non resident. They are 2 totally different accounts a fiscal resident has a resident account a non resident a non resident account all down to tax I believe. A non resident must certify every 2 years that they are indeed non resident. You will need seperate accounts.

I agree with Bob. Two totally separate types.

Hola

May i suggest that as it is for inheritance purposes, you contact Blevins Franks https://www.blevinsfranks.com as they are specialists in reducing taxes.

I have no financial interest in Blevins Franks except as a satisfied customer

You may want to check out BBVA's Online Account, which they market to "International customers". See info here.

With the online account, I don't think it matters if you are resident or not. We have it and we are non-resident. I don't believe we have ever had to certify we are non-resident and have had the account for more than two years.

The other nice thing about the online account is that there are no mantenance fees.

Not sure how that works then as I believe that the non resident certification is mandatory? I also believe that a resident can't hold a non resident account ? Not sure how this being International account affects this?

Well, I'm not sure either. It's not an "international account". It's an "Online Account". But they seem to market it to both residents and non-residents. Maybe they have different flavors of Online Account -- once you go to set it up -- depending on whether you are resident or not.

caroline c - Maybe stop by a BBVA office and ask if it would work.

Would you like to tell Ciaxa bank that, I've been legal resident and paid my tax here for the last nine years, on several occasions I have asked Ciaxa to change it to a resident account...they say no it's not necessary as I pay my tax. I have also never had to sign anything in that time.

Its not me that says it I am just offering what I understand as the situation and read . The link I put on says the same. Every 2 years I have to certify my non residency status. I also know people that had to change from non resident account to resident account when they became fiscal resident.

The accounts have different numbers to identify that these are for residents and that those are for non-residents.

You can have a joint bank account if you are both resident - only 1 needs to be FISCALLY resident.
My wife lives here permanently but is fiscally non-resident.
We have a joint account with Sabadell.
