Been doing a bit of work for my girlfriends dad who is an undertaker and quite enjoy the banter and humor that goes with the job, I suppose there will always be a call for undertakers but I cannot find any info of starting a business in Spain as an undertaker, this is just putting out the fellers for the future...any undertakers out there?

The business of dealing with the deceased here in Spain a whole different ball game than in UK. The most common options are hermetically sealed above ground coffin which is usually for a fimite nunber of years ie 5, 10, or 15 years paid in advance, depending the local laws. If not renewed then the coffin is removed to communal ground. In earth burials seem to be a real minorty. According to Spanish national law, remains must either be (i) preserved or (ii) embalmed by an undertaker within 48 hours of the death. The death must be registered within 24hrs. The bulk of funerals are cremations I believe and within 72 hrs is the law for Spanish nationals.

there will always be a need for them, but there are plenty about, usually family run businesses.

do you have any training and experience in mortuary science or is it just a laugh and a giggle with the girlfriend's dad ?

why don't you come out here and mingle with the professionals and discuss the business
just remember that this is a country that buries/cremates in 2 days, no hanging around like the UK.

Price for cremation back in 2009 was a bit shy of 4000 euros.... Prices when you check around seem to be between 2000 and 4000.

I paid 2000 for my husbands cremation in July this year. That included 3 Spanish death certificates, 3 international death certificates and an excellent quality large urn for his ashes.

Just realised that people may not know that you pay for the funeral before it occurs. You are given the bank transfer details immediately, you pay and then take the receipt along to the funeral with you.

Slightly off topic (but its 04:45 and I'm awake with back pain so don't care) my last aged auntie now 94, wants to be buried in a bio degradable wicker coffin, is this 'eco' nonsense taking off in Spain?

Eco funerals could be a niche market to explore in Spain perhaps.

I really cannot remember the breakdown for my husbands cremation but must have included storage from death till cremation which was at least a week. A full day in the tanatoria plus the actual cremation and the an urn. There was a car for transporting me to and from crematorium and the cost of tea and cake included in that.

We have just taken out funeral insurance as if something happened tomorrow we could not afford it. We are 62 and 61 and it cost 30€ per month.
The insurers reckon 2940€ for a cremation all in.

I hope it's not pre-paid funeral - as opposed to funeral insurance

my dad had pre-paid for his funeral in the UK - & he died here in Spain - it took months to get the money back from the funeral company - one extra hassle you don't really need at the time

My MIL pre-paid for her funeral, she thought that she was doing the right thing but in actual fact it only covered about half of the costs. When they sell this idea to the old folk they do not tell them that it only covers certain aspects.

they had pre-paid for my mum's too - & to be fair it did cover everything - all the bells & whistles, cars, flowers etc.

but you could only have the funeral at the place you had paid - & you never know where you're going to die
