Hey all,
Im making the big move with my spanish girlfriend in 2 months time and have a quick question for everyone.
We are taking our 2 cars over as they are good, expensive and the second hand market here is just stupid at the moment, id rather we both had reliable vehicles that i know are good as were going to be in a village. Im a mechanic and plan on opening my own garage in Malaga City (yes i am mad). my question is on tyres in the ITV test. i know about the tyres in date subject however noone can seam to tell me wether there are any more rules? a friend has told me that all the tyres need to be the same make and have exactly the same tread?? can anyone tell me if this is true or not?
thanks all

I have gathered some info already and as a uk mot tester i think i can already say the ITV is no way near as strict as the uk mot but still safe. i know that all the paperwork engineers report and reg papers must be done prior to ITV and that the tyres must be in date (stamped on sidewall), also the fog light must light to the centre of road (unless you have 2) and the reverse is to light the kerb (again unless you have 2), hoping that others could input to help?

Hola
Speed and weight rating is important - ITV have a computer that tells them the minimum speed / weight rating.
On the same axle the tyres must be the same - in theory - in practice I have known it to be missed - BUT not on rematriculation ITV test. ITV engineers are human and have good & bad hair days

IME, having put 2 cars through matriculation, the ITV is stricter than the MOT, at least for the initial registration.
This is because they treat the car as being New to Spain, and it must meet the original specn for that car when imported by the manufacturer.
Tyres, check and double check, ensure that all tyres are identical and also that they are identical to that listed on the tyre pressure plate you will find somewhere on the car (the BH's car it is on the driver's door post adjacent to the door catch, on mine it is inside the petrol filler cover.)
Be especially careful as to the speed rating letter on the tyres, if it is wrong it is an immediate failure, as the UK don't bother about it all tyre centers don't bother either and you will find they usually fit the cheapest to make the most profit
if in doubt phone the manufacturer and find out what would have been fitted when that car left the production line.
Head Lights, my car has a "touring" position for temporary use when travelling outside the UK. It failed because they must not be temp but permanent as they would on a new car. The manufacturer's franchise here in Granada said they were being over strict. But I had to pay €800 + labour to sort this so I now have lights that dip the other way if I take the car back at any time.
Remember that any alterations and modifications that have been made (other than Go Faster Stripes) must be removed. The first ITV for matriculation is for a car imported into the country and it must be as if it was new. In a couple of months time they are both going for their first post matriculation ITV and we will see how strict now they are on Spanish plates.

BE is a very large expat website, so if you have problems finding your way around we have concierges who will try to direct you. The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums.

Hola
The tread depth is the same as the UK - as a ROUGH guide, in the tread there are wear bars. If the wear bars touch the road surface. the tyre is worn out. Think it is 1.6mm
