It's Raining at last!

For many of us who can't tolerate the excessive Spanish Summer heat, it's going to be a choice between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.

I'm feeling a bit groggy this morning as we were up at 3.30 am taking down the gazebo on our roof terrace, after being woken by the horrendous noise it was making flapping about in the high winds! Just in time before the thunderstorm and torrential rain arrived. The rain had slackened off a bit by the time we woke up again but looks like it's set in for the day, so the San Miguel Feria will be a non-event. Shame, and will also have bad economic consequence for a lot of traders which is the last thing they need at the moment. Somebody up there doesn't like us.

I've just seen in Diario Sur that a woman has died in flash floods near Alora, and there is serious flooding in a number of other areas too. It looks really bad, hope everyone is safe and property doesn't suffer too much damage.

Sounds a bit biblical excluding famine and pestilence I hope

I got soaked on Wednesday, sunbathed yesterday, got soaked again today, and am sitting about in winter gear this evening.
The storm has knocked out our pirate TV, so the Spanish music is playing instead, nice and loud. Noches de Ronda, even the dogs are dancing.

The devestation in Alora and surrounding areas has to be seen to be believed, I've never seen anything like it here before, first we had the wilfires and now the flood!

Minute long Tornado in Gandia last night.
Wind, rain, trees uprooted, ferris wheel and coaster at the fair collapsed, fair tents and stalls destroyed - 50 injured and 15 seriously.

UPDATE: reports suggest the fair was already close due to the storm, otherwise the injuries would be worse, most of the injured were in the main paseo due to failling trees branches and tents.

The situation in Alora was on the BBC news this morning, commenting on flash floods and several people killed.

I was watching the storm from the relative safety of my terrace last night and a wall of rain was hitting the right hand side of my house, while amazingly, another wall of rain was hitting the left hand side with the strong winds coming from the opposite direction.
The two fronts met in the middle of the swimming pool and started to form a swirling mini tornado. I rushed indoors to put all the shutters down.

Just been around Gandia. All around the fairground area there is damage. Car showrooms with no roofs,no glass windows, the stage for the fiesta is currently being supported by a crane, roadsigns down, walls down, fences down, roof of "tented" fiesta building behind plaza mayor shopping centre is off, trees up rooted, .... very lucky no one was killed
and the calls have started "i am getting no sat signals...."... looks like a busy next few days
