Default Intercom systems -any ideas ?

I am not technically astute and require some info please

Problem with the intercom link from main appartment door to our indivudual flat

There are no neighbours I can ask due to a lack of the necessary language skills

The link does not function - when the flat number is keyed into the pad at the main entrance to the appartments the word LO appears and the intercom does not ring in the flat

Do these systems work on the mains or are they operated by batteries ?

I can not see anywhere on our flat intercom where you would put a replacement battery. Have tried the appartments agents but without any response . Any ideas what can be wrong ?

If it is a building problem then I'll need to keep contacting the agent until something is done . Am reluctant to call out an electrician for him to just replace a battery

Thanks

Do you have a caretaker/handyman who looks after the apartments ?
There is usually one, ask him.
Or tell the agents to pick the rent up from your apartment, they will need the buzzer working then

The usual reason for this type of fault is that there is a bad connection on the back of the button that you press to call your apartment. This could be a corroded joint or broken wire. The only way to check is to remove the front panel of the intercom and have a look...not recommended though (just in case you diss lodge or snap any wires that go to your neighbours apartments!)
Another reason could be that your handset in your apartment is faulty.
An intercom is a very simple system that consists of a speaker, mic and a circuit for the buzzer. There are no batteries involved (maybe a back up battery in case of mains failure). The whole system will be low voltage ( 12-24 volts)
It should be a very easy job for any electrician to pinpoint the fault.

I will gladly repair it for you free of charge....but you will have to wait a year or two before I move my alarm/CCTV/door entry business out to Spain !

Thanks Tones66 and JDR

Looks like a fault at the main door of the building - just surprised the locals have not been up in arms about it

Am in UK at the moment so on our return will pressure the agent for some action if it has not been rectified

Handyman ????? The residents would certainly not pay for a handyman - people who removed half the light bulbs in the main hall in order to save on electrical costs are not going to pay up for a handyman

A resident took charge of the pool - result no pool for a year !!!!!

A careful lot the Spanish - would not pay 30 euro a year for translation of the Community Meeting notes into English ie less than 1 euro per flat

Am surprised when in the local book shop seeing people buy 1 sheet of paper and 1 envelope . Guess there is still a lot of poverty

Cheers

Pedro

However I stray from the main point
