Does anyone know what makes that electric buzzing type noise in the trees?
Everyone we know knows the noise but noone knows what makes it or how they make it.
A pic would be great also.
Thanks.

I always thought they made the noise with their legs or wings, but apparently not!

They contract and expand their stomaches which act a bit like a drum.

They are quite pretty with their wings like leaded glass windows. I once walked thru a small valley where the olive trees were covered with them, and the noise made the whole place vibrate.

Crickets they are definitely not.
However Cycada can sometimes be confused with Katydids, one of the differences being that Cycada tend to be noisy during daytime and dusk only, whereas Katydids go on and on, making their noise right through the night.

There are house crickets, the black field crickets and the burrowing mole crickets, which construct a burrow that acts like an amplifier, and produces an amazing volume of noise. Tracking them down is a hell of a job because the sound appears to come from all around.
The zizzing noise in the trees is deffo the cicadas tho.

Maybe in Spain they are all commonly categorised as cycadas, as we have just seen from our learned sensational friend and his crickets.

Interesting. I've seen cicadas here, grasshoppers, all sizes, and a few crickets other than the house or field, but I don't remember seeing anything like a katydid.
