Just a bit of advice for people thinking changing their license.I would do so as soon as possible, we did are,s at the being of the year and the process took over 3 months to get the new license back. For those that don,t know you have to take a medical first then submit all required paper work to the D.G.T head office.

I thought for an exchange the medical was not necessary?

According to DGT, based on their info sheets, a medical is not required. However it depends on the DGT office that you apply to. Málaga DGT do insist on a medical, others may not.
As with everything in Spain they interpret the rules as they think fit. Bearing in mind that a Spaniard must have a medical before his first licence is issued and the fact that the UK do not have medicals at all (with some exceptions) this could be the reason for their interpretation of the rules.

OK should have known! I can't remember now after so many years whether I had one for the exchange or not.
On another point can medical centres who can arrange for renewals also help process an exchange (which would make it easier for people)?
I recently had to visit DGT Alicante to process a change of address and I must say the cita previa system is a big improvement as there always used to be 100s of people crammed into DGT which in Alicante is located in a gloomy sub-basement office.

I have recently exchanged mine and a medical was required however per Fred's comment I'm in the Malaga region. Not sure whether the medical places can deal with only renewals or not. I got a gestor place to sort mine out and only thing I had to arrange and attend was my own medical everything else done by the gestor. Mind from putting licence and starting it wasn't quick took around 6 months before my Spanish licence arrived. Of course that may be down to backlog of Brits trying to get sorted before the B day!

I totally agree with the recommendation to use a gestor. It can be a real pain dealing with Trafico and, for a relatively small, fee it's well worth doing.

Expect they are fed up with Brits having avoided changing for years (and ignoring the law) are now rushing to get it done.

This was on Facebook this morning posted by British Embassy in Madrid - Brits in Spain page -
'Exchanging your UK licence for a Spanish has long been one of our key Brexit preparation messages, though we know many of you have had problems getting an appointment. In response, the Spanish authorities have, this week, put special measures in place to help UK nationals get into the system as quickly as possible. If you have not already exchanged your licence you should register your request for an appointment by 1 November. The DGT will then guarantee that your UK licence will be exchanged during the 9-month grace period set out in the no-deal Royal Decree and, importantly, you will not have to take a test. You can register your “solicitud” online, by calling 060 (in Spanish only) or in person. For more information see: https://sede-org.dgt.gob.es/…/canje-renovacion-…/index.shtml. If you can’t register your request before 1 November, don’t panic. Your UK licence will still be valid in Spain for 9 months, during which time discussions will continue to ensure a clear process for the continued exchange of licences.'
