One question.

What makes these people 'important' guests to Seville?

Because he is the heir to the throne of a European kingdom.

Most Spaniards would expect the same deference to be paid to the Prince of Asturias and his wife if they were to visit the UK.

True, although these people may not do anything to "make themselves important", the fact is, that by an accident of birth, they are.

That is the way it is.
rightly or wrongly

Agreed. It's not going to change in the foreseeable future.

I get the impression that the Spanish people respect their monarchy more than the Brits do.

Is that so?

I suppose so..... it seems that the press have not built up the monarchy the way the British press has......it started with Diana, every new dress, hairstyle etc was put under a "lupa" cant think of the word in english.

They were built up so high that when things went wrong they had such a long way to fall, the very messy divorces, air miles Andy, catapult knickers Fergie, and Edward and the wife (cant remeber the name) have had their share. Even tho old queen mum, with the pickled liver and gambling debts.

Although I must say I do have a soft spot for good old Phil, hes a bit like me always putting his foot in it.... he is a straight talker, and a hoot.

Elena de Borbon. is divorced from her husband, and there has been no great scandals, not public tears and tantrums, and no accusations, quite dignified really.

I suppose you know that we have out own Princess of the pueblo, Belen Esteban, revolting person, the ex partner of Jesulin de Ubrique, Lord of Ambiciones.

She is never off the TV, she has a face like a bag of chisels and pulls more faces than a tag team.
She is far more "revered" that the royal family......:eek:

Having read your post I just had to look up a photo of Belen Esteban.
She sure gives Camilla some serious competition.
I certainly wouldn't like to run into her up a shady back alley on a dark night.

And let's not forget the Spanish beauty, Doña María del Rosario Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, 18th Duchess of Alba de Tormes.

The spanish media are a lot more discreet and respectful with their royal family. Also there isn't the world fascination with them like the UK royals. Who knows what would come out if there were constant stories about them. There have been rumours over the years that Juan Carlos has had a few mistresses. The Queens nephew was implicated in some corruption scandal in the canaries and there was some story concerned with art leaving the Prado. I can't remember what the story was about the family a few years ago but the magazine that printed it had all the copies withdrawn from sale.

many spanish reckon that Juan Carlos will be the last King of Spain but I don't know if that is just wishful thinking:lol:
