Someone should offer a counter argument to the OP and say how wonerful it is..... so here goes.

CE is a WONDERFUL place, a lovely British colony within Spain. A resort in the style of the plush golf driven complexes that attract the world's rich such as can be found in the Algarve and the richer end of the Costa del Sol - except at a price affordable to the normal person, and becoming more affordable with each day that passes. So rather than attract the snooty, unapproachable real millionaire types, CE appeals to the lower end, the common, salt of the earth type people from Northern Grafters to East End Barrow Boys. This creates are more inclusive community, and if rumours are to be believed some parties can be REALLY inclusive.
There are at least 5 satellite dish installers within a stone's throw, so one is never too far away from Corrie & X Factor. One can delight in in taking in the wonderful weather the area offers without ever having to learn Spanish - given that your neighbours are also fellow Brits.

In short, and in contrast to the OP who hates the area, CE is laaaverlllly!!!!
