Default how to stop dogs getting tick infestations

Hi again folks...

I am staying in the campo with my dogs, they all wear scalibor collars but are being continually infested with ticks.. what's the best stuff I can use that is compatable with the scalibor collars, ( I actually thought the collars prevented ticks too) Thanks

Jan

We use advantax which seems quite effective on a monthly basis.

Mine does not wear Scalibor collar, I use Avantix monthly. Any ticks I see are dead. I used to use Frontline Plus for my dog but she started itching like mad with it.

Her first vet had not a good word to say about the collars and advised against them. I know some dogs are allergic to them.

Frontline seems to work very well.

Nearly lost my Mutt with tick fever a few weeks back, hadn't Frontlined him soon enough, my own fault.
His temp.was nearly 41c and he was going down fast, had to get the vet out of bed in the middle of the night.

Ticks seem rife this year, maybe down to the milder Winter here.
I often dust the inside of his collar now with tick powder as extra protection.

I have very little faith in the tick collars at all as an effective form of protection.

Nought to do with me who they let in, as long as they let me back in

My wee dog has Brown Tick disease from a tick here in Spain. She seems to be fighting it fairly well maybe one episode a year which needs a month of antibiotic. It has affected all her joints, two legs repaired, her jaw is not getting worse with regular winter glucosamine. She is a happy wee thing bless her.
As to tick removal, I have seem some really stupid things for tick removal, if any are ever fixed to my dog, none for several years, a drop of medicinal alcohol makes them let them go, then dispose of them appropriately .

I have bought in a ferreteria that has pet food. I also buy lovely healthy treats for her in the ferreteria in Orgivia when I am up in the area and from a vets. I will look on line too now since she has no bad reaction to it.

there are two advantix, one basic one you can buy at pet stores the other which also covers the sandfly and mossiesis from a vet as prescription only in spain and Uk but.... you can buy it on line at half the cost in france and ship it here. Scalibar collars via amazon in the UK are also half the price than in spain.

you people are always so helpful, it would take half a page to thank you all.. but thanks Dick for the link.. very helpful... from what I can gather this avantix is a once monthly treatment on the skin between the shoulder blades... dose according to weight of dog.. I'll go to the vet tomorrow and get some... but will definately be grateful for any more advice re keeping my babies safe here... I knew I could rely on you xxx
