I can only echo Chrisw and jandy's comments - surely if one of your dogs was undergoing some lengthy treatment, you'd appreciate some support?

We're all dog lovers on this thread, so it's by far the best place to discuss issues regarding our furry friends.

Really, nothing is forcing you to read any of these posts, but surely you could have a bit of thought for Sam's feelings?

Was out with my dog this morning Sam, and was thinking "Oh, the two Sams are on their way to the Vet now!"

Hope you weren't too worried when you left him?
Just think, this time tomorrow, little Sam will be curled up on your lap in a way he hasn't been able to curl up for months!!

Its strange how they do things over here and Portugal. I had to drop him off at 9am and am picking him up at 1pm (all Portuguese time). All I keep thinking is he will be so sleepy and groggy, normally in the Uk they get dropped off at 8.30 and pick them up at 5pm.

I am setting off to pick him up in 15 minutes and cant wait to give him a kiss and a cuddle. I just keep thinking of him in the cage sleeping it off.

Thanks for you concern guys. Its great to be able to speak through this forum. It would be different if I lived in the Uk as I would have my mum and friends to talk to about it. But here there isnt anyone that really understands.

Hello Sam,Iv only just come on line today so you would of picked little Sammy up by now,I do hope everything has gone well for him,I expect he will be groggy for a while yet after the anaesthetic,but Im sure hes going to feel so much better soon without them nasty pins.........Bless Him..

There is a simple answer to that, just ignore the thread.. then you don't have to read anything about it.

The main difference I've found here is that the animal is a lot more drowsywhen you pick it up, hasn't come fully round from the anaesthetic, but that's probably just a culture difference, UK vets keep them till they are fully running around, Spanish vets, till they have come round. Hope he is finally OK, and can get around as he did before his problems, and ignore the negative posts, sas I've said if they don't like the subject then they don't have to read or comment.

God what a horrible day this has turned out to be. I came home about an hour ago with Sam and its bad news!!! They did operate on him but when they opened him up they found the pins were still too deep to be able to take them out!!! He now has stitches in both his knees and is just sleeping it off at the moment. I just want to scream and cry but I wont because I dont want Sam sensing my upset. So now we have to wait, God knows how long but it will be weeks.

Poor little Sam, and poor you, going through all this turmoil and upset.

Do you know whether they could move the pins at all, so that hopefully he won't be in so much pain this time round?
Although it's terribly upsetting, I suppose in the long run it's best that they leave the pins in until they're sure they've done their job - cos you certainly wouldn't want him to have to go through it all again!
Apart from the waiting, I'm sure the worst thing by far for you, has been seeing in him in so much pain that he was vomiting
If that can be aleviated, then I guess it's just a case of giving it that bit more time - hard as the waiting can be.
I'm so sorry that it's such a tough time for you, but please do keep talking to us about how you feel, as we're all here for you

Oh Sam.I cannot stress enough how sorry I am,its so very dissapointing news,I really feel so sorry for you,poor Sammy my heart goes out to him.How difficult for you to have to continue to watch helpless whilst he is in pain,I wish there was something we could suggest,hes just gone through the op.for nothing.Couldent the vet done e-rays first,to see how the pins were.
Sam have a good cry,it will do you good.............

Well Sams looking a lot more awake now. I took him to bed this afternoon for a couple of hours and he slept it off, and I caught up with some much needed sleep. He is just uncomfortable at the moment and keeps going round in circles trying to lie down. They did take an x-ray when I went with him last week and I saw it myself. They said the joints had heeled a lot since the last x-ray and it should be ok to take them out. On Monday they spoke to the surgeon and he said go ahead with it.

I spoke to the vet about him tensing up and his front paws coming round his head. He doesnt seem to think its the pain that is causing it, he seems to think that Sam remembers what the pain was like before the operation and puts himself in a defence like position to cope with it. So thats a bit of good news I suppose. So we are going to wait patiently for things to progress so that next time they can take them out. He is also on a perscription diet (which he doesnt really like) so that should also help. If he is hungry then he will eat it and make a difference to him.

Oh Sam, I am so sorry they couldn't take Sammy's pins out yet. It was all looking good for him as well wasn't it? Has the vet said how much longer they think the pins will have to stay in now? I do hope it's not too much longer for both your sakes. Give Sammy a big hug from me and we will all be thinking of you, so keep us posted with any news! I won't say don't fret too much, because how can you not. But each day that passes is one day closer to getting Sammy back to his old self. Tare care now and keep your chin up!
