There are loads of financial advisors in Spain - most are rubbish but Blevins Franks seems to be the only ones worth listening to.

They are spot on about UK domicile.

They have been publishing a useful book - 'Living in Spain' for many years, the only problem is I suppose things are changing so fast it is impossible for the book to keep up todate despite frequent new editions. They also have a web site with free PDF downloads.

Just an update for your info

Have been investigating this business of cancelling the Residencia and from
what I can gather if you do not cancel it here properly you are still considered to be a fiscal resident and they can come after you for tax on your worldwide income.

Also according to the EU rules you cannot be a resident of more than one EU country at a time.

But you can pay tax in more than one country so I suppose you CAN be Fiscally Resident in more than one.

"Residencia" either in the form of the old card or the new green card/form has absolutely nothing to do with tax residency.

If you leave Spain permanently then you can "baja" from the list of foreigners using exactly the same form that you used to sign on originally.

To respond to Snikpoh's post, you may pay tax in more than one country but you will normally only be tax resident in one.

Take the example of someone who has a UK government pension and a UK state pension and lives in Spain. You would pay tax in both the UK and Spain but you would only be tax resident in Spain.

Income arising in the UK is always taxed in the UK irrespective of tax residency. If you have a UK state pension it arises in the UK and will be taxed in the UK. If you ask HMRC nicely they will, under the terms of the double taxation treaty between the UK and Spain, allow you to have it paid tax free in the UK and pay tax on it in Spain.

There is a set of rules within the tax treaty which determines which country in which you are tax resident and under those rules you will only be tax resident in one or the other - not both.

We closed all bank accounts, but did nothing else, we had residency and health cards but just came back to UK, we were very unlikely to be going to be visiting Spain again. We were never asked about cancelling with INSS either.
