Hours of Work - Builders

I seem to remember a thread on here once about the hours during which construction work is permitted ... but can't find it again!
Our neighbours (who aren't in residence at the moment) are having a dry stone wall built around their villa and each morning, at 7am a tradesman arrives and starts breaking up stones. We have asked him nicely to please start a little later as we are on holiday, but he doesn't take a bit of notice. Any thoughts?

They should not start making excessive noise before 08.00, tell him you will call the police and denounce him.

That will make for good neighbourly relations in the future :D

Our neighbours came here for a fortnight to do their front garden a month or so ago. Because of the heat they worked through the night, sometimes till 4 am, or sometimes started at 6, breaking stones and building walls.

We all decided it wasn't worth the hassle of denouncing them for something that was only going to go on for a limited period of time

We have no intention of calling the police nor of denouncing him ... just hoped he would bear with us - we suggested 8.00am as a suitable time to be woken up!

Since the weather is mostly cloudy this week (i.e. not too hot) we felt it was a reasonable request!

Should point out he is a contractor employed by our neighbours, rather than a neighbour himself (whom we have not yet met as neither they nor us live out here full-time), so hopefully we can negotiate something!

Thanks for all your replies!

Why don't you invite him in and give him the full English washed down with a cheeky red it will kill time until 8am and give you a chance to brush up on your Spanish and learn about the very skilful art of dry stone walling.....;):D:lol:

Since we don't actually LIVE here ... and are simply here on holiday ... we don't give a monkey's how quick he does the job. And our villa is rented out when we aren't here (we bought it instead of paying into a pension fund in UK after a close call with Equitable Life before you write some stupid quote that we are minted) so our paying guests will also complain!

We understand from the builders/developers of our 'urbanisation' that noisy building work should not start before 10.00am according to local laws ... so it is a bit bl**dy early!

He has been building this wall for five weeks (yes, its a big wall!) so far according to our guests and the people who clean our villa!

Have no sympathy with him at all

Just what is a suitable time, i'm a builder and it doesn't matter what time you start theres always somebody on holiday and would rather you not be there at anytime, if you start at ten, what time would you expect him to finish, i tend to work 10 hrs a day so would you be happy with him working up to 8 at night, they empty all the bins where i am from at 2 in the morn, start strimming the grass area,s at 6,30 in the morn it's got to be done so let them get on with it, he's not going to be there forever.

Yes, but if you are only there for a short time, and he is there ALL the time you are there, then it would seem a bit much to you...

it strikes me that some of you are like the people who buy a house in the english country side in a little farming village and them complain about the animals.

So if you don't want him to work, and your guests don't want him to work, and the people who clean your villa don't want him to work ,whats he to do ?phone you up and ask when it would be convenient for you for him to work so him trying to make a living doesn't interfere with you and your guests visit to his country ?.

The fact that you have no sympathy with him will get you very little sympathy from us who live here and accept the ways of the Spanish ,good or bad :)...you really must learn to be more tolerant...;)

ps .......Most Spanish only take any notice of the law when it suits them ,thats another thing you learn very quickly when you live here .

Interestingly enough ... he has started work at 8.15am for the past two days ... just like all the other contractors round about who have been building villas here for years (including the British ones)! Perhaps he has been reading this thread!

As for 'you really must learn to be more tolerant' - we are actually very tolerant indeed, having lived on a building site for the first three years we owned our villa with no problems at all! We didn't ask for your opinion, merely if there was any legislation governing this matter as he didn't respond to what seemed like a reasonable request that he start slightly later inline with everyone else.

And yes, we are guests to his country, but he and a lot of other Spanish (and British) builders would be out of a job but for those 'guests' as I don't see many Spanish having huge building jobs done and the largest Spanish building company has recently gone bust, putting even more of you on the 'social'!

You don't know us at all ... we have lived and worked in many countries including Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Spain, China, Indonesia, Germany, USA with people of many races, colour and creed - we speak Spanish, French and a bit of German/Dutch and have Spanish friends in cities all over Spain (Madrid, Alicante, Sevilla), not to mention other countries. We have never felt superior in any way - in fact sometimes we are embarassed by the behaviour of our compatriots. We chose to buy our second home in Spain because we like Spain, the Spanish, and the Spanish way of doing things! We engaged Spanish builders and architects to design and build our own villa and respect that it is their country and things will be done in their way.
We would be just as irritated if the builder were English, since we had only made a polite request (in his native language) that he helped us to enjoy our holiday and start inline with all the other contractors round about at 8.00am (which is not late in anyone's book)!
