I have spent all my life running these trucks back and forwards in Europe, and was in charge of insurance claims, and arranging insurances for the company, whether it be CMR as it was, RHA or marine (full cover insurance if you want to call it that)
The insurance you are referring to is limited and provided as part of requirements, starts about £800 a ton iirc but dont quote me on that as it will be a few years out of date and hopefully its increased a little. Thats not going to cover Jack Sh!t when it comes to personal effects which are normally lightweight and cubey.
Hence anyone with sense takes out full insurance to cover their liability or ends up getting short changed in the event of an insurance claim

We’ve come to the conclusion we should focus on the quality of the company rather than the price, but how do you really decide who is ‘quality’? Is the decider ‘they’re expensive so they must be good’?
Mitzyboy, are you suggesting the client should go for the minimum insurance with the removals company and insure separately elsewhere?

We’ve had extremely bad experiences in the last few years with insurance companies in general. Like NNNNNNNN I picked up on the poor level of cover that the removals people are offering in their T&Cs.

I agree, trying to choose a mover is a headache. You can see plenty of good reports for one mover and then a bad report for the same mover. Cost means nothing. I've seen bad reports for some of the top names in removals. But I've also seen good! I'm not being much help am I!
I've emailed my own business partner who is still in the industry to see if there is any one company getting glowing reports at the moment, and will come back to you

Thanks. That would be interesting to know.

Hi all,
Good questions and well put TB!
Thanks for your PMs Mitzy, your assistance was very much appreciated!
I think I have just got my head around this "total loss" and "GIT" insurance now. If I understand it correctly, the carriers take out their own insurance, you take out your own and if you do need to claim, you claim from your insurers who then claim from the carriers insurers. Sort of like a knock for knock agreement innit? Tch! Seems stupid that 2 lots of insurance needs to be taken out to carry the same goods!
We had already decided to number the boxes, but will take your suggestion Mitzy, and write out inventory lists for each box, inspect if any visible damage to boxes and open and inspect goods straight away.
Can you tell me what security tape is and where I would get it please Mitzy?
Also you recommend triwall boxes. Would you say tea chest size is ok? It would obviously be easier than trying to fathom out how many of each size boxes we would need. Could you recommend a company that supplies them? I have only seen double wall, with the exception of one company but I think only to store in their own facility and not priced. The double wall tea chests are about £3.80 each.
What would you say is an average % per £1,000 of goods that insurance should cost and would it be GIT, or marine? We were quoted 2% but will ask as you say, for copy of the insurance cetificate so we know exactly what we are, or aren't covered for.
Haven't heard any response from that removal company after I sent them another email advising that BAR agreed with me that no contract, no fee due. Also advised that I had made a complaint against them and so is the removal company we are using for slagging them off. They were aware of this company and had previously complained to them.
Surveyor came today, local man currently trying to sell a house in next village which needs some work and has 1 bedroom less for £10k more than ours so valuation should be ok. Asked if he thought everything ok, and he said "yes, beautiful."
He also commented that the new owners wouldn't have to do a thing as it is in excellent condition and we have obviously spent a lot of money on the property. Of course we have to wait for his report to be written up and passed to purchasers mortgage lender, but must admit I feel relieved he has been.
Thanks Mitzy,
by the way, did you enjoy your beer last night? It seems I am driving you to drink as well as Bob! Lol!

No ... thats absolutely not it. Carriers insurance is normally limited in some way, so normal carriers insurance probably won't cover your goods, which is why they suggested additional insurance. Their insurance is in force for general carriage for all peoples goods, not just yours. My point was that if you take your own insurance, with the carriers knowledge, then at least you know absolutely what your cover is, and indeed that its actually been taken out. An old trick for spurious companies in the industry was to charge you for insurance but only take it out if there was a claim. Some insurance companies, as you can imagine, dont like this retrospective cover!!!

I used to use Jiffy Packaging, but they are in Birmingham so not much use for you I guess. Look in the Yellow pages for storage compamies such as Access Self Storage, or for packaging suppliers
If you want tea chests then they are strong for sure. The tri walls we used were bigger than that, just depends on what kind of stuff you are packing. Maybe put your real breakables in t chests.
By security tape I mean dont use sellotape. Use something with strong stickiness so you can tell that its not been tampered with. If (and theres no reason they should) customs inspec any of the boxes they will re seal with a tape that shows you that it was Customs that did it.

I'm a bit out of date .... we used to pay about 1.25% as trade. Make sure you have the full terms and exclusions of the policy before you take it out, not just a certificate when you have taken it out. Its no use if there is an exclusion, for instance, because you have packed stuff yourself, or you have used the wrong packing material.
