Butane is a poor performer in cold weather so use Propane but any gas fire like these produce a lot of water so not good in a damp room/house.

Yes aircon cheapest! It's just not as cosy given the position of the unit in our ounge diner. Also I believe it's only cheaper if it's one of the new inverter models? True? Or false?

False. They both use the same heat pump principle.

The only difference between the two types is the way the compressor motor runs. A normal unit just cycles on and off on a thermostat. The invert type can vary the speed of the compressor. This saves a small amount of power as it is cheaper than stop start as the starting load is high.

The A/C salesmen will try and convince you that the inverter units are somehow magically 30% cheaper to run. That's very unlikely and it depends on how they are being used. A 10% difference might be more likely in a normal domestic environment.

Apart from the very cheapest units, most now are the inverter type.
