Default Healthcare

Hi All, I am a new member, we are moving to Valencia this year as our son and his family live in Spain, we are both under retirement age but have independent means, can anyone advise a good healthcare policy ?

Thanks
Paul

State healthcare is free to everyone in Spain.

Maybe, but so far it has not been implemented in every region, and when you apply for residency, they will not accept that and insist on health insurance or pensioners cover under the S1 scheme.

Also, the free healthcare for all law is now stuck in the legal system as there is no government at the moment prior to upcoming national elections.

I am also under retirement age but have independent means and am looking for a health care policy so I can apply for temporary residency. However, I can't find a policy that does not make you pay for 12 months cover, even though I will only be here 6 months a year at most. That means almost 1000 euros a year which is way too much, especially as I already have a travel policy with emergency cover plus EHIC of course. Does anyone know of a healthcare policy that allows you to cover just for the time that you actually need the cover? Seems so wrong that I should have to pay for 6 months' cover for Spain when I am back in the UK.

It might seem wrong but I am afraid that is the rule. You cannot stay in Spain for more than 3 months without right of residency and to acquire that you need insurance ,your card is not valid. Companies offer 12 month contracts. Also be aware that after 180 days you become a Spanish tax payer not UK. After Brexit you will find all this much harder to do.

From what you say you have no intention of permanent residency? You want to stay up to 6 months in the year? Is that for one year or per number of years? If for one year then most would simply use travel insurance and EHIC. Yes the 90 day rule technically applies but is pretty much ignored (brexit may change that). Or one day out of Spain on day 89 say resets the 3 months. To get residency currently you do usually have to obtain a full 12 month healthcare policy. Also if you take residency you should no longer use an EHIC as that is issued on the basis you are UK resident ? I have read of some people actually obtaining residency with an EHIC but would be dependant on the region of Spain you apply to.
