Before we left the UK over twelve years ago my wife was allocated a special medication to control her Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is not cheap not cheap at all. Her needs followed us to France and here the drug is prescribed by a specialist and no problems whatsoever. Just simply email the Pharmacy and it is there the following morning.

What please is the procedure in Spain and as I say I think I now know the basics and again grateful to everyone.

well as one who has a touch of rheumatics I can say I have felt better since moving to Spain, to the point where I no longer take the UK prescribed Alopurinol.
a lady in her 30's who has had almost crippling rheumatics since her teens came out here, working with BH, and although she gets the odd attack is much more active and finds life alot easier to live.

perhaps the water, the food, the drink, the air, the being 750m asl but alot of people have made comment that their rheumatics is far better in Spain. And I don't see much physical evidence on the elderly out here as one does in the UK

I know its all an old wives tale told across the garden fence - but like all such has some truth in there.

Conversely I know a guy who has heart problems and been told to move down to sea level and has his house on the market as it is on the mountain above our village at about 1400m asl and he is desperate to get to Malaga just to stay alive

Spain (probably like other countries) has a different attitude to the Nanny Health Service and many drugs are available OTC unlike the UK. I seem to recall basic Ibuprofen is only available to 400g without prescription but the Spanish farmacies sell up to 800g OTC.

Can you email GPs in the UK and get advice, even when they are not your actual Dr?

If so then that is incredible!

Even more incredible if you could email them in a foreign langauge and get the same advice

A basic reply would be being polite and may lead to business.

In Spain you are not going to get this.

when you start work - if you are both self-employed you will have to register as such & pay upwards of 250 € a month each in 'national insurance' payments - then you will be able to access state healthcare in your own right (as opposed to the UK paying it for you)

for TEFL work you have to pay the full rate - for some agricultural work there are reduced rates

and then tax on top of that..........
Thanks Lynnx. I tried the DWP website today, but couldn't find an S1. Do I need to go into an office? Newcastle is a long way from Birmingham! Any suggestions?

The S1 is not a form for you to fill out. You have to contact the DWP to request that they provide you with this cover, the S1 is the form that they send to you that states who it covers and for how long. This you then take with numerous other pieces of information to the INSS in order to then gain health cover in Spain.

Dear Cricketman by way of an update have received by email a reply from a GP in Calpe and indeed the manufacturer in Madrid.

Of course we live in France but we order all of our prescriptions by email with the Pharmacy and by the time we arrive he has all of our carte vitale and prescribing background and top up insurance processed and we just pick it up.

Works well

19ÂșC and clear blue skies down here! Nice evening for the Three Kings parades which will be going on all over Spain. Do they have them in France? Or does Pere Noel bring the pressies?
