Default Health insurance in Spain

I'm thinking of taking out a private health plan for my family and I with Sanitas. Has anyone had any experience with them good or bad? Any recommendations for other providers in Spain?

Cheers,

Pat.

We have private insurance with Sanitas through my husbands company.

It's OK. I have no complaints.

You get a list of the doctors/hospitals and specialists local to you, that you can use. I can just call them direct and show my card when I arrive. That's it. Oh but you do have to pay if you use them. I think about 12 euros if you see the doctor.

Most of the doctors along the costas speak English too.

If you have a doctor or hospital in mind to go to, I would check that they are with Sanitas or some other insurance company before you sign up.

There is also I think a big price difference if you use sanitas.es and sanitashealthplan.com -

Might help to compare, I use Adeslas and have for the last 16 or so years, I have no complaints... as yet anyway . Not sure what age you are but one of the things it might be worth looking at is the price scale on age as this will increase as you get older and what you are and are not covered for.

I'm also Adeslas. I have to pay 3 euros each time I visit and dental is included.

However, I chose Adelas because they have a contract with my local all singing, all dancing clinic/5* hotel and I chose them on that basis. For all I know Adeslas doesn't work with your local top clinic, or maybe Sanitas doesn't either.

If you know who you want your doctor to be, or where you want to go when you are ill, I'd go and ask them which insurance companies they work with. Just because you have insurance doesn't mean that you can pick and chose which clinic you go to.

Thanks for the answers. I'm 44 by the way. I live near Mijas on the CDS. The English rep for Sanitas said the nearest hospital is in Marbella which is a bit far but she also mentioned the local hospital, Xanit in Benalmadena, will be part of the network as of next year. I also have a friend who is with Sanitas and states there's a hospital in Torremolinos I can use (you think the rep would know that). Sanitas have a rather long 8 month qualifying period for any surgery that isn't life threatening which is a concern. Thanks for the suggestions re Adeslas. I'll have a look. I have been quoted 132 euros a month for Sanitas 'classic' for myself, my wife (43) and 6 year old daughter....

Did you ask Sanitas direct for a quote to0?

We had our first year through a rep down (Susan warner I think) on th CDS and it cost far more than it should if we had gone direct. Learnt lesson. Now I pay just 29 euros a month for me (but it is on hubby's company
policy).

I have been sent for scans at Xanit by my local health practice.

I have not got any good words for them.

Crap, rubbish, lack of customer service and even downright rude etc.

However my doctor who agrees with my comments does say the scans they produce are of the best quality, that is why I am sent there.

Thanks. It was through her. I'll see what I get from the Sanitas website.

I'm with Previsión Médica, costs us 116 euros a month for both of us and that covers us for any doctor, clinic, hospital in Andalucia. Have used the Xanit and personally can't fault them

I have Sanitas Classic. No complaints. Be aware you pay a small charge everytime you access the system. You can get an online quote off the Sanitas website, and compare all of the different systems

up until last november when i was living there, i used Aresa, 52 euros a month each and no charges if i went and saw the doctor. Used them throughout my first pregnancy and birth aswell and have to say they were brilliant.

We are also with Prevision Medica, paying 84€ per month for the two of us. We took the policy out at the beginning of December 2008, having requested a quote via their website, and were advised that they had a special offer at that time hence the reduced price.

We get books of vouchers from them which we just present at the clinic and do not have to pay anything extra when we see a doctor.

We haven't needed anything major yet but I have no complaints about their service, quite the opposite.
