Ok the point rspltd was trying to make earlier was that having a child requires no commitment from the parents, it is merely "just one of the outcomes of having sex". While they also claimed the commitment that results from getting married is far greater.

Maybe you (or rspltd) can enlighten me as to how some statistics about children being born to unmarried partners, lone parents claiming benefits, and numbers receiving from the non-resident partner support this claim?

It has no relevance at all. Every relationship is different and they certainly don't need to get married because some close minded people say so

Btw given that most domestic violence ocurrs within marriage, then surely that is a good reason not to get married (following rspltd's logic)

Someone else on this forum who is 50 years out of date :p

I am married but only because it was a great chance for a party for the whole family, and so not to embarrass the traditional Spanish abuelos

But I'm with the OP, having a child is the biggest committment one can make. And with child support agencies and the like these days, there is no running away from your responsibilities

You really do contradict yourself, are you sure you are not twins?

You say people don´t need to get married because closed minded people say you should, but then state that you only got married so as not to embarass your Spanish inlaws. see above quote.

Very romantic (not)

Oh and you also said to have a party, which you could have had without the ceremony, and called it a "I am not getting married" party.

I have had numerous parties, but only been married once, they do not always have to go together.

You can have a party without a wedding and, even a wedding without a party.

My OH and I do not need a wedding to be romantic

Yes we got married for those reasons - and we had a great time! We thought of it as a party because marriage as an institution means absolutely nothing to us

One of the reasons we got married was to please the family, but we didn't need to get married to please the family. See the subtle difference there?

We decided to get married initially because of the additional rights you are given, and also it was a good way of getting lots of friends and family together. People are more motivated to attend weddings than "I am not getting married parties" for some reason  especially when attendance requires getting on an aeroplane and booking a hotel.

As for commitment - we felt no more commited to each other than before the wedding. Indeed we know of people in Spain who have actually got divorced just because it helped get their kids into a decent school: children from simgle parent families get extra points, and the cost of getting divorced is pretty low if you don't get the lawyers involved.
