Any idea what this bug is or will become?

Not a clue. There are very minor similarities to a processionary, but obviously it's something quite different.
I've already seen a processionary nest around here.
Seems fairly early for them yet, wonder if anyone else has come across them lately ?

Yep. Near us there is one tree that has lots of large, well established nests. I spotted the early signs of nests in one of my trees almost 6 weeks ago so destroyed them before they really got going.

Google hawk moth caterpillar, specify images, and you'll then get a choice!! pretty sure it's one of those.....

Yes, it's a Hawk Moth - we have had lots of them - the cats bring them in.

It should turn out to be a ' hawk Bird Humming Moth', We get dozens and dozens of them during the summer months....Delightful and harmless.....
