Hi Glad 2 be back! I was just reading your experiences of living in Spain and am sorry that you had such a bad time of it, and that also your daughter was treated so cruelly by both the other children and especial the teacher who quite frankly abused her trusted possition. It's great that you are now settled and happy back in the UK, albeit that for now it may be a stuggle I am sure it will get easier for you as time passes. Heres hoping, and good luck to you!
With regard to the 4X4 comments, I don't know the M.O.T. figures in relation to the percentages of child fatalities in comparison to other cars so can't comment on that. I don't think I am selfish driving a 4X4, I am courtious to other road users and don't think I own the road. I have this car becase I am tall and have a back problem and it is the most comfortable posture for both those reasons. I also have a large dog, and 5 grandchildren so the car is frequently used to capacity.
As regard to "not giving a toss" about the environment" I don't understand that comment at all. If you are referring to co2 emmisions and fuel consumption, my 4X4 fares MUCH better than the Ford modeo, (which I have also previously owned) that "so called environmentalists" seem to choose I should have instead.
I find some of your comments really surprising. You appear to be pre-judging me, in the same way you yourself have been prejudged in Spain, and have to hand your own "pre determined" prejudices. This did rather surprise me under the circumstances.
It is, after all is said and done, just another car, and not worth getting worked up about!

In that case, you will also want all: lorrys, trucks, tractors, busses, firenegines, ambulances, JCB's, Mobile cranes and the like removed from the roads immidiately as well then?

I'm sorry, but 4 x 4's are not the problem. I drive one and it is no bigger than a people carrier, the chosen vehicle of transport often for the school pick up. Careless driving is the problem, not 4 x 4's. Get hit by any car at 40 miles an hour and you'll be lucky to emerge unscathed.

I think its Peugeot that just bought a car that is designed so that the pedestrian will roll over the bonnet ....... presumably over the roof and to be hit by the car behind.

The key to reducing accidents is to educate drivers, enforce 20 mph speed limits within a reasonable distance of schools, and increase penalties considerably for dangerous driving imho. The vehicle, whatever sort it is, is a blunt force intrument and dangerous to pedestrians.

Where in any post have I suggested that I drive around in a 4x4 because I'm safer?

Yeah you are right that they are higher, but so are busses and kids get on them to go to school!

I do live in the country and NEED an 4x4, but you haven't bothered to ask what I think of urban 4x4's, you have just assumed that I'm an arrogant 4x4 driving townie trying to look big in my 4x4.
It may also interest you to know that I totally disapprove of bull bars, as a solid lump of metal WILL kill a child, but my bonnet, with its inherent crumple zone is less likely to!

The stats just dont stack up, the proof is not there, it is all supposition, like saying that IF we stepped out of a moving train we would be killed, well sorry but IF my uncle had tits he would be my aunt!

Sorry to get huffy but I hear this all the time, and some bloody woman actually spat at my passenger window the other day and called me an earth murdered!

I whole heartedly agree!

I have the mickey taken out of me all the time by mates about the speed I drive, not only does it conserve my diesel but it also ensures that IF I need to brake suddenly I can!

The slower you go the faster your reactions, and the Gov dont help!

If they actually wanted to cut down speed related deaths they could in a flash, all they have to do is place semi-intelligent speed cameras at certain points that can work out your mean speed between them, you cannot possibly evade them!

But no, the revenue is much needed!

Here here! Hope you spat back! If it is on Environmental issue, NOTHING can be produced without polluting to a certain degree! WHY WHY WHY is this ONE item, ( a FOUR BY FOUR, there, I said it again!) boringly ALWAYS singled out as the only usable example of the begining of the end of our planet!! I put it down to indoctrination meself! Certainly not a sustainable arguement based on facts, is it?

Hi Rugbymatt!
There is an even easier way of restricting speeding that would be totally unnecessary for any additional expense. To make it mandetory for car manufacturers to fit speed restrictors on each new vehicle. Wouldn't that be a vote catcher? (NOT!) and as you say "the revenue is much needed".

Judging by the comparisons of the tax wedge across various countries, you might find that the average Brit is better off than the average Spaniard. For 2005 data Spain is some way worse than the UK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax#Tax_burden

I think those driving large 4x4's are deluding themselves. A very small minority actually need them, most drive them as a fashion item or because they feel more secure in them. If you have a large family, a people carrier would be more suitable than a 4x4. The impact on pedestrian safety from large 4x4's has been investigated before and has indicated that they generally have a worse impact http://www.brake.org.uk/index.php?p=267 . I like driving a 4x4, I enjoy the space and upright position, but I don't try and delude myself that it isn't worse environmentally and worse for pedestrian safety.
