Sorry, can't remember as we were taken to Murcia to a notary office, but we were in such a rush dealing with everyone I just can't remember, it was one chosen by our estate agents.

Re: Halifax UK to Halifax Espana
Just a word of advice to those who do not already have an account with Halifax UK and are becoming Spanish residents and opening an account with them in Spain. Open an account in the UK first before leaving/early on.
We moved to Spain from France, and after opening an account with the Halifax in Spain found that to open an account in the UK was no simple matter. After months of thinking it was going to be impossible, we eventually managed by calling first and then going into a local branch near my parents' home to sign the papers. The complication was related to the fact that we had to prove we were UK residents to open the account and the number of questions on the written form related to this made it very difficult! Halifax Spain could give us no help at all with the procedure, so I'm surprised to read that a Halifax UK bank could give help going in the other direction... Anyway by phoning rather than filling out a form it was simpler and at last we were able to benefit from the free transfers. |
Re: Halifax UK to Halifax Espana
The problem with Halifax España is their lack of branches. You need to check that there is a branch close to where you will be living. My nearest is an hour and a half away by train and I have never yet to find an English speaking person available. You can´t make regular payments from UK or through the internet to any Spanish bank so transferring requires an expensive phone call each time. If I were starting again, I would just open a Nationwide account in UK and withdraw here as needed free of charge and then put the cash by hand (free) into a local bank for debit payments. At least I would be getting some interest on my money by leaving it in the UK which would be more than any savings on the occasional free transfers Halifax offer.

Re: Halifax UK to Halifax Espana
Just over three years ago we looked to transfer money for a house purchase and opened Halifax UK and Spain accounts. When I compared the Halifax exchange rate to the rate given by HIFX currency dealers we actually received €6,000 more using HIFX. We still use our Banco Halifax account here as our main bank. I have a pension paid into it every month. At first I locked into a 12 month contract with HIFX where the exchange rate is set for the period of the contract. Ideal for budgeting. That was paid by DD from my UK bank to HIFX who then transfer it to Banco Halifax free of all charges. In fact for two months I was charged a fee but that was refunded when I complained. I now use a similar method but use Currencies Direct. There is no contract so you get what the exchange rate is every month which I have found to be better every month than the HIFX fixed rate. Again that is paid free of all charges.
Banco Halifax have never charged us for receiving money when we have transferred lump sums. As was previously said it is a pain as there are few branches but we use cash machines where the 'servired' sign is displayed. Some will try and make a charge but just go to another one and they are free. Banco Halifax also use internet banking which is again useful. Hope that helps. |

Re: Halifax UK to Halifax Espana
Sorry Lionda if I didn´t make it clear. HIFX offered a far better rate than the Halifax in the UK.
