I have an Halifax account in England and also one in Spain. There is no transfer charge from the English Account to the Spanish Account. If you transfer money from your Spanish Account to another Spanish bank the charge is 1.80 euro.
Just looking through my paperwork to see how you open an account, we walked into the Calpe branch to open ours.

Yes, you can make transfers between Halifax UK and Halifax Espana. It is free, takes about 3 working days and very easy really.
In order to open a Halifax acct in Spain, you will need to go in personally with a valid Passport and proof of address (UK or Spain....doesn't really matter). Some have mentioned that you will need your Spanish NIE number, but I did ask at our branch again to make sure and they told me that the passport is sufficient.

When we opened our account we dealt with a man, when we have been in since it has always been a man but there was a young woman at the next desk. The last time we went in was to ask which ATM machines we could use without being charged and the young man in the branch took us outside and walked with us to a ATM and pointed to the sign 'Servico red' and explained to us how to use the machine and to watch out that we only used the ones with the sign outside as if we only see servico red on the ATM screen it means they will recognise our card but we wil be charged. Good information. They are so helpful at that branch.

I'm sure you'll get the chance to meet her when you're here next. She's lovely and does her utmost to help/advise in most situations.

I seem to remember that transfers from Royal Bank of Scotland, Bank of Scotland to the Halifax in Spain are free too.

Yes, that is what we did, I have just looked through my paperwork and there is nothing to say that you can open an account any other way. You could try phoning them they speak English. Here is the link www.halifax.es
