Guadelupe weekend

Re: Guadelupe weekend
Hola! sonofspain,
R u really spanish? R u a true romanticist? Can't believe that either would mis-spell Becquer's name.
Hi Sam,
Enjoyed reading your post. Karma for your efforts in walking and telling us about it!
We drove (easier option! can't imagine doing this pilgrimage on my knees...) to Guadalupe on a daytrip from our hols in Trujillo. I always wanted to see what attracted people from all over the world to come to this shrine.
Inside the monastery, it it breathtakingly beautiful in the cloisters. There is a museum, too, with reliquaries. We climbed inside the main chapel to an antechamber, wherefrom we were allowed to gaze upon the doll-like image of the Black Madonna. Only a few were permitted to kiss the image.
The mountain area near Guadalupe is covered in forest, and descending towards Trujillo, I was amazed at the beauty of pairs of birds of prey (eagles, buzzards, vultures?) soaring above us.
Regards,
Carol

Hi Carol
Thank you very much for your kind comments and the karma!
Well, it sounds like you've explored the monastery far more than I have!
You're absolutely right; it is a stunning place, with an amazing amount of craftsmanship and ecclesiastical riches!
I haven't actually been into the ante-chamber, but of course I have seen the Black Virgin. Not sure I would particularly fancy kissing the statue though
Have you been on the tour (which I think is of the older part of the monastery?) It's something I'd like to do, but just haven't managed it yet!
I particularly like the atmosphere in the Plaza in Guadelupe; and just like sitting and watching people (and the policemen "directing" the traffic at the fountain )
Parts of the town remind me of Clovelly (although obviously not so hilly!) The cobbled streets and flowers everywhere are very reminiscent, I think.
Of course, the main street is geared to tourist gifts, but as that seems to be about the extent of tourist "tat" here, I've decided I can live with it
Yes, all the countryside around the area is stunning
Did you see the aquaduct?viaduct just outside the town Amazing.
The birdlife here is second to none, and I see any number of birds of prey on an almost daily basis. Yes, they are vultures that you've seen! Did you go to Monfrague at all? Loads of the ugly brutes there!
Hope all is well with you?
All good wishes,
Sam.

Re: Guadelupe weekend
Hi Sam,
Thanks, all is well over here .
I'll post a quick () reply on this thread, as I see you have attached more photos of Jerte Valley on another! You do get around these days!
I feel Extremadura will be a region where I MUST to go back and visit. So much to see and savour... Our hols 2 years ago included a fleeting stopover in Trujillo and Merida, enroute south.
Guadalupe is a name I have heard mentioned - mainly in connection with Mexico - along with Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Lourdes (France), and Fatima (Portugal). It cried out for a visit, so we did it, but, I think, on foot, you would experience far more. I can't recall a viaduct (need to ask John if he remembers), see what I mean?
We did take the tour of the monastery, and I was one of the group who held back when invited to kiss the image of the Black Virgen. (Didn't think I should push my luck)
Monfrague National Park appears huge on the map, and, as we are a family of 4,with car, enroute south, perhaps another day... Or, to be honest, I'm lazy at heart...
Carlos V and Yuste sounds interesting, so does Zafra/ or Zufre (one is in Huelva?), and Jerez de los Caballeros. My wish list grows & grows...
Take care on those tracks,
Best wishes,
Carol
p.s. 5 smilies. I am n addict!
