Great books on Spain

I am thoroughly enjoying reading 'Slow Trains around Spain' by Tom Chesshyre - informative, interesting and entertaining book about his recent travels around Spain mainly using the local lines (as against the AVE) Published 2022. You need not be an 'anorak' to enjoy this as the focus is on Spain and it's people.

and also - 'I'm off then' by (German) Hape Kerkeling. 'Losing and finding myself on the Camino de Santiago' also entertaining and informative especially if you fancy getting your boots on (or you have already like me) and hitting the Camino. Published 2009 in English.

You may enjoy " The New Spaniards" John Hooper. written in the 1980s and it serves as a good insight into the evolution of Spanish society after the dictatorship. Not even sure it is still in print.

Thanks for that and yes I read it a while ago - I totally agree well worth a read. Plenty of 2nd hand copies around if it is now out of print.

The latest updated print edition was 2006.
Agreed, a good insight.

I have built up quite a collection over the years of various books on Spain & would recommend any of these:

Travel
  • Alastair Boyd's "The sierras of the south"
  • Back roads Spain (Dorling Kindersley
  • Christopher Howse's "The train in Spain" & also "A pilgrim in Spain"
  • Simon Courtauld's "Footprints in Spain"
  • Ted Walker's "In Spain"
  • Any of the late Michael Jacobs books
  • Robert White's "A river in Spain" (the Duero)
History
  • Peter Strafford's "Romanesque churches in Spain"
  • Jeremy Treglown's "Franco's crypt"
  • Paul Preston's "A people betrayed" as well as his other books, including "Juan Carlos"
  • Giles Tremlett's "España, a brief history of Spain" , "Ghosts of Spain" & "Isabella"
  • Fernandez Morera's "The myth of the Andalucian paradise"
I'm also waiting for delivery of a new book on Spain by Michael Reid & called "The trials & triumph's of a modern European country". Had a good write up.

Winter in Madrid is a spy novel written by C. J. Sansom.
The setting is the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War in 1940.
