Default Granada safety?

Is it safe to go around the Albaicín during quiet hours like siesta or late at night?
I thought Granada was fairly safe but Lonely Planet go on about muggings in the Albaicín during siesta. I'm not sure if this is a typical Lonely Planet "heard it through the grapevine report and therefore must include it in the book" thing or not.

we stayed in that area a few years ago & walked about late at night with no worries....then we read a poster someone had put up about the risk of muggings & took more care. There's a maze of alleyways so you are a sitting target.

Just take what you can afford to lose, the bus service is good & cheap.

At night you don't actually see many people around so I think the risk is high, the area is full of gypsies too.

Which is why it is famous

A good place to watch an impromptu street flamenco performance, for the tourists of course

"is a typical Lonely Planet "heard it through the grapevine report and therefore must include it in the book" - Sorry to say, a fair assessment of Lonely Planet these days, but it does not mean you leave your street smarts at home.

"...and get your pocket picked at the same time." - Ah, a Dick who has never been, otherwise you would know there are very few places to congregate on the way up for the subtlety of pickpocketing (and the likelihood is muggers will have got you before this very unlikely action).

Please do not come where we drunks, dopers, muggers, Muslims, ageing hippies and (ooh my) fearful tourists go as you may spoil the vibe for those of us who want to have a hard time.

Best wishes.
