Google Earth

Has anyone checked this out lately? Parts have been updated. Our area (Chiclana) has been updated to around easter time. Very interesting!

I can pick out my house in Velez-Malaga on Google Earth - not very clearly because of the pixellation when you zoom in so close, but it's fascinating. But also a bit scary - if we ordinary mortals can see so much, what can the intelligence/security services of various countries see?

Have you ever watched 'Spooks'? :scared:

No, is it good? I've never been keen on stuff like that as I always thought it was far-fetched, but after seeing Google Earth, maybe not!

I tried to see my old house in the UK, but the definition was crap, wasn't using the premium part of the site, too mean to spend that sort of money, but it didn't seem as good as I ahd expected from comments I have seen.

I think they are concentrating on the USA, then us after.
Although where I live is not too bad, I can see my car etc, but not the dollybird who lives nearby

Re: Google Earth

Paying for an upgrade apparently doesn't give clearer photographs just more options and facilities.

The photographs are continually updated with the more recent ones being of much higher definition.

Regarding Spooks, I don't know about the storylines but the technology they use is certainly credible.

Does one need to have ADSL to download Google earth or not? I have checked the web site but wasnt too sure, if I could download without it taking for ever. Any advice?

I love Spooks, shame about Ruth's departure tho, she was a key character and complimented the "team".

13.7 mb to download, so ordinary dial up would be very slow.
I've just had a look at my area here, and I can see my car in my drive, much beter clarity than the UK maps for where I lived, perhaps it would be better in the Uk in a different area, much more detail on the maps here. can send them to friends as e mails so they can see just where we live.

Yeah Spain is better than where I lived in the UK, I think big cities are clearer also.

Hi La Joconde,

It depends not only on the speed of your download but also the speed of your graphics card inside the PC. I have 2MB adsl so downloading the software was not a problem but my PC then told me it could not run it without an upgrade to my graphics card. Fortunately my son has the biggest, meanest, fastest beast in the west so we put it on there and I creep into his room when he is out to get my shot of google earth.

However all is not lost if you can't get the full job log on to google and enter maps this will give you a site something like maps.google.co.uk and you get 2/3 rds of the functions of the google earth, if you combine the map and photo at top right you get something very like the real thing without the zoom pan and tilt functions.

Regards, ;)

John.

Our house is shown clearly, but our pool still isn't there which was completed last Easter. Shows those of our neighbour's though.

Just checked and our pool is now on, so it must have been up-dated again in the last few weeks...

Thanks for the info John, I will check out the map&photos as you suggest.. sounds like a good alternative for me, shall give it a go.

A silly question I expect, but how do I find out what graphics facility I have on my PC???

Thanks again for the help. Cheers!

How do I search for areas please? For instance, if I type in Joondalup it doesn't recognise it.

A lot of places dont exist (it is American) find the biggest town near you and scroll to where you want. When I first used it the closest I could get to mine was Malaga. A few other places are on now, but still not where I live ;)

Re: Google Earth

Once you have found your location you can save it as a favourite place so that you can go straight to it the next time.

You could initially use SIGPAC, which uses the same photographs, to find your location then use the comparison to find it on Google Earth.

Images are at least a year old, and probably over 2 as well. Looked at my area, and there are quite a number of places that just don't exist according to the map, Habaneras in Torrevieja is one, and thats been open well over a year. Several new developments aren't even started near here, but actually have people living there.

Not neccessarily so.....My pool is only a year old and is shown quite clearly. You have to make sure you have the latest version of Google earth...I found that I was not using the most recent which is why I couldn't initially find my pool.

Benalmadena Pueblo has been about possibly as long as America :D it is on the map but if you put the name in no go.

Information date for my area is 2003, so well out of date, other areas are 2002 - 2006.

They seem to update areas in blocks, and some areas don't seem to get much attention, and remain a blur. But once you have found yourself its really interesting. If you are lucky enough to get high definition you can take a sneaky peak at your next door neighbours garden!!

Some parts of UK are excellent, others crap. My sister lives in Blackpool, you can see their house. I lived in rural Lincolnshire, can't even see the village  . My wife is from Leicester, you can just about see Leicester, but no definition at all. :scared:
