Default Gibraltar broadband

Hi, I just went to GibTelecom and was a bit shocked at the prices I saw there for broadband:
£24/month for a 1MB line
£54/month for a 2MB line and
£94/month for a 8MB line.

Contrast that with £12.50/month for a 10MB line with Virgin in the UK that looks like daylight robbery.
Is there an alternative to that or do I have to get used to these prices once I move to Gibraltar?

The big difference is that your 10mb line in the UK will struggle to get 2mb.

A 3mb line in Spain will get 2.7mb all the time.

Looks like I will need to get used to these prices.

Does anyone work in the sector and can tell me why it's so expensive? Looks like Spain is a bit cheaper but not a lot, nothing compared to the cable providers. Oh well..

The country is too small for any of the big players to be interested.

I believe Gibtelecom connect to the rest of the world by satellite link.

Sapphire have recently laid a fibre optics cable to Spain that links in through ONO

Gibtelecom a mostly Government owned company control all the landline infrastructure.

CTS are offering wireless broadband to avoid Gibtelecoms strangle hold.

Please note most things in Gibraltar are noticeably more expensive than UK

You will find a lot of expats shop on both sides of the frontier.
Spain generally for value. Gib for a taste of England

Prices are more expensive in Gib and Spain than Northern Europe.
It's just how it is.
Certain companies have the monopoly and in Spain Telefonica keep everything artificially high.
It's the same with Mobile deals.
On the plus side cigs and beer is cheaper.

Have a client in Gib, based on my experience I would suggest that if you need a reliable internet connection then avoid CTS like the plague. Complete disaster from beginning to end, using GibTelecom now and everything is solid as a rock
