I was talking to a local British shopkeeper and he was quite pessimistic. It will be more difficult, he said, to import fresh food because of the customs delay and extra charge being levied by hauliers to compensate for increased paperwork, and ban on animal-based products including dairies will hit the best-selling lines. I for one am not too bothered, like you, as I am happy to eat Spanish and continental products generally, provided I can get certain seasonal products like cranberry sauce.

Looks like it's an even closer agreement than what e.g. Andorra has and the border/customs problem is pushed back up to GB, i.e. there would be similar problems putting stuff on a boat and going to Gib as there currently are going to NI.
Is it me or is Brexit is having the opposite effect to what was intended? Also these deliveries to Gib are now taking place. |

As far as I can see other than logistics there are no problems putting things on boats to deliver to Gib. Gib is no longer in the EU and therefore EU rules no longer exist unlike NI.
Also these deliveries to Gib are now taking place. At the moment Gib is out of the single market and customs union. When this agreement is agreed it will for all practical purposes be inside it, with Spain reserving the right to conduct spot checks for certain products on their side of the border. So once Gib is effectively inside the single market and customs union, a similar situation will arise between GB and Gib as there is now between GB and NI. |
Re: Gibraltar 2
Seems I can't edit. I've just realise it says deserving instead of reserving. Damn autoincorrect.

Hi Si
It would appear that next Christmas for expats living in the EU it will be Port and no Stilton no Melton Mowbray pork pies, no Cornish Pasties or Greggs sausage rolls, no proper bacon for breakfast. Also no Haggis for the New Year, etc. |

Highly unlikely that will be the case , especially the availability of Port , the other items should highlight a business opportunity for an enterprising expat baker.

Re: Gibraltar 2
Surely all of these things can be legally imported - just not for personal use.
I'd imagine that the likes of Iceland will still carry them. |

The British owned butcher's shop I mentioned earlier already makes and sells a whole range of pies including pork ones. I've only tried a chicken and leek one so far but that was very nice so things are looking good. Oh, and they sell sausage rolls as well. I've only tried a Greggs sausage roll once when I lived in the UK and I wouldn't care to repeat the experience.

I would have thought so too. It's just that (currently at any rate) people living in Spain can't bring them across the border so won't be patronising Gibraltar shops to buy them. Prices, I suppose, may well rise as its understandable that exporters may well need to pass on to customers the costs of extra administration and transport costs.
On 'personal use', apparently today Dutch customs officers were confiscating ham sandwiches from lorry drivers coming from the UK. When asked if they could take the ham out but keep the bread, the officers said 'No - it all has to go. Welcome to Brexit'. |
