FIFA Council recommends Gibraltar be admitted as 211th member

The decision follows last week’s ruling form the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS], which said Gibraltar must be admitted as a full member of FIFA “without delay”.

Gibraltar first applied to join FIFA in 1991 and again in 1997, but both applications were rejected in large part as a result of pressure from Spain, which argued the Rock was a disputed territory that did not meet FIFA’s criteria for membership.

The trilateral forum for dialogue “is extinct”, the Spanish Government said last night as it insisted on bilateral talks with the UK over the sovereignty of Gibraltar.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which said Gibraltar had been “amputated” from Spain, was reacting to Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond’s visit to the Rock yesterday.

During his brief stay here, Mr Hammond reiterated the UK commitment to never enter into a deal or discussions on sovereignty against the wishes of the Gibraltarians.

In a statement, the Spanish ministry repeated its longstanding position on Gibraltar and territorial integrity.

“The colonial situation of Gibraltar is an anachronism…” it said, citing UN work on decolonisation.

“This colonial vestige destroys the national unity and territorial integrity of Spain and is incompatible with UN Resolution 1514 of 1960 on decolonisation.”

The Spanish Government said it had repeated on numerous occasions its desire to engage in bilateral sovereignty talks with Britain in line with UN resolutions.

But it had done so “…without obtaining a response to date.”

The Foreign Secretary's arrival and departure flights into Gibraltar this week were not allowed to overfly Spanish territory and flew over Portugal instead. This has been confimed to GBC by the Convent. This was because of a long-standing NATO restriction imposed by Madrid, despite the fact that Spain and the UK are full NATO partners.

It’s been a momentous evening for Gibraltar after the GFA was accepted into FIFA as it’s 211th member, following Kosovo’s acceptance only minutes before. The Gibraltar FA's admission into football’s world governing body comes three years after UEFA granted it membership and will allow the Gibraltar national team to compete in the qualification process for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The European air transport sector has voiced deep frustration at the continued deadlock over Gibraltar that is blocking progress on key EU aviation agreements.

Despite mounting pressure, Spain continues to seek Gibraltar’s exclusion from the aviation packages, ignoring its commitment under the 2006 Cordoba agreement to include the Rock.

Court decision clears way for Gibraltar Rugby Union to join European governing body

A court in Paris has cleared the way for the Gibraltar Rugby Union to become a full member of the European Governing Body. At a general assembly vote in Stockholm three years ago, Gibraltar won the vote but not by the two thirds majority needed.

The court ruled that procedural irregularities and influence, exerted on the General Assembly by a Rugby Union board member, impacted on the result.

The French courts have now annulled that decision, which opens up a new opportunity for the Gibraltar Rugby Football Union to proceed with its membership vote, subject to an appeal on the court’s findings.
