Between accounts is no problem, it has a paper trail. It is cash that is a problem and the initial opening of a bank account. If it's so easy why do you think all these Mayors were found to have so many euro hanging around the house. When I withdrew 26000 euro from a spanish account last year I was taken into an office and given a Bank of Spain form to fill in. Usual identification stuff NIE etc. One of the questions was "What is the Purpose of this cash withdrawal" I said (correctly) to pay for "work on the house".
In the news there are incidences of mayors putting it in their bank account anyway and then years later when they were audited they have been found guilty of laundering illegal funds. The money the OP refers to is legal. It is not illegal to accumulate a lot of savings. Indeed many people have a safe in their homewith a large quantity of cash in - legal or not :). Everyone is within their rights to put their legally gained money in a bank account. The government can ask questions, but they cant take it away from you unless they can prove it is illegal. That is theft. Carrying cash is a different matter as there are EU agreements on how much cash you are allowed to carry on your person when you cross a border. |

Yes we are told it is legal but then why not just call the banks and ask the best way to go about it:)

I have done a bit more checking and it seems thatSpain, like Germany, has a rule that any sum over €10000 (or equivalent) must be declared in advance of taking it out of the country. The general EU law allows free movement of cash within the EU but allows individual countries to impose requirements for declaration. I've always found the only way to get accurate information is from government/EU sources like the one I quoted.
The link you gave is for a site that appears to offer some really out of date information. They quote an exchange rate of €1.64 to the pound - I wish! The bank information sounds like it applies to reporting of transactions rather than carrying bags of cash over the border. |
